Recording SD on a brand new tape(from the analong RCA inputs), or playback of old regular SD tapes, to output to another VCR to make a plain old analog copy?
My thoughts are it is worse to expose the heads to an older dirty tape, than to record(even using the recording heads, along with the playback heads) onto a new, clean tape. I don't care which way produces better quality, it hardly matters since I'm just copying old tapes. But i need to use the Mits deck for either the player or the recorder, obviously.
I have a Mits 1100 that i ONLY use for playing/recording HD onto DVHS tapes, from my 3416 DVR's firewire. I want to baby it since you can't just waltz out and buy another one for cheap.
Any thoughts/answers are greatly appreciated!

I would'nt put a dirty old VHS tape in my DVHS machines.
You can get brand new Mits 2000 DVHS machines for $90 or so.

I walked into ABC Warehouse...asked for their best price....was quoted one in the $90-99 range...I walked out with two of them new sealed in boxes.
There is no difference between "record heads" and "playback heads". There is only one cylinder- makes no difference whether you're recording or playing. DVHS machines are no different from any other helical-scan tape machine in this regard.
So obvious it comes down to the tape. Running an old tape through the machine is probably going to deposit more material on the drum than a new tape.

Makes sense to me. I've been recording to a brand new plain vhs tape instead of playing back the old tapes.
Thanks for the replies.
