View Full Version : Well I just sold out...
paulstachniak 04-30-07, 10:19 PM picked up a Sony BDP-S1. i was previously an HD-DVD only guy, but the recent sales numbers and upcoming releases forced me to jump.
interestingly i picked up the unit, new, for $898 canadian. i bought it at the Brick in Toronto, originally I was going to pick up their remaining floor model, however, when I got there, the sale rep couldn't find the remote for the floor model and after spending a good 20 mins looking for it, he caved in and gave me a new unit - which was odd because they said they were sold out over most of southern ontario. likewise, he also sold it to me NEW for the floor model price, I guess he just wanted to get out of there, it was close to closing.
at any rate, I just picked up Gone in Sixty Seconds and placed an order for Casino Royale and Layer Cake through amazon.com
so yeah, here I am now.
beatboy77 04-30-07, 10:22 PM I honestly would recommend getting the PS3 as it is more future proof.

hey man, at least blu ray players have software to offer. the moment the ps3 has any games i'll buy one.
i'm fine with my 360.
phansson 04-30-07, 10:32 PM Congrats,
I think you will be happy. By the way, you didn't sell out, you just became neutral.

You dont need to play games to realize how good of a deal a PS3 is an a Blu-Ray player ONLY.
edfowler 04-30-07, 10:35 PM Josh, let the guy be happy with his choice.
I got a PoS3 and had to take it back cause it never worked right from the get go.
Did just order a BD-P1200 a couple of nights ago.
paulstachniak 04-30-07, 10:42 PM Well to be fair, I just got my 4th Xbox replacement yesterday. However, I wanted a solid stand alone player (I'm not into 4-D gaming at the moment). The Panny was a bit too expensive and a little too sold out for my liking. I've heard questionable things about the Samsung and the LG, so the Sony seemed like a good choice. Also several of the reviews I read online where very positive.

Dude ...lemons are a fact of life ...you should return the PS3 and get a new one. Its not that much of an effort.

I am a gamer and have had a PS3 for 4 months and have only used it for BD, so I agree. Once you do the remote work around its a good player. We just need all the BD studios to release the hounds...
ryoohki 04-30-07, 10:46 PM Or you could have waited for the S300 witch come out soon.. at approx 699$CAD MSPR...
RioRebel 04-30-07, 10:53 PM I recommend you stay with the Sony for 1080p/24. Or get the Panasonic for 7.1 analog outs and the widest audio support. Or get the new Samsung because it has the best upscaler.
Or here's an even better idea...
I recommend we find out what someone's needs are before we start pushing our favorite player AFTER he already bought one.
paulstachniak 04-30-07, 10:56 PM ^lol. exactly.
Or you could have waited for the S300 witch come out soon.. at approx 699$CAD MSPR...
I kew about this... but Rescue Me Season 3 comes out in June... and I kinda wanted it now. Can't say I'm gonna complain about saving about $400 bucks on the current unit I bought.
As for a good upscaler, the Toshiba A1 i have does a great job. it's not going anywhere.
beatboy77 04-30-07, 10:56 PM I appologize if I offended. I just want to make sure you have the best player which is future-safe at the same time. The player you have is nice though, so by all means enjoy :)
The BDP-S1 as we know does not play CD's, only has HDMI 1.1 and has the early version of BD-J. These are all things which could pose a problem in the future. Of course if these issues do not matter to you personally, then there is no need to consider a different player.

Maybe he prefers a true 1080p output and better PQ.

nah man. no offence taken.
as for future-proofing... who are we kidding. I remember getting in on DVD in 97 and knowing that the player I was buying would only be around for a year or two. Sure enough, two years later, DTS becomes big, my reciever supports it but my DVD doesn't, long story short - I upgraded. some people are perfectly fine with having a dvd player for years and years, then there is me (and I think quite a few of us on here) who always wanted the newest and the best and we'll jump through some hoops to get it.

well, let's be honest this whole BD-J issue is a joke. the fact the format is almost a year after launch and this STILL hasn't been finalized - compared to the amazing HDi system HD-DVD is kinda pathetic. however, that being said, extras where fun back in the days of laserdisc. now-a-days, i really don't watch a lot of features. i've never once used the U Control feature on any of my HD discs. right now, I just want a good PQ and uncompressed PCM sound (if possible).
Ripnickus 04-30-07, 11:02 PM How exactly did BD become the "sell out" position? I prefer the term "smart, intelligent informed consumer".

Motorstorm is better than any game on all 3 next gen systems.
With that said, you don't *need* to buy a PS3. I often wish I had waited on the PS3 and picked up the Samsung BDP1200.

better than Gears, Oblivion (yes I know this is on the PS3 - I'm just saying), Crackdown, Vegas and Double Agent? Nah, sorry man, I don't agree with you there.
it is fun, I've played the demo, but Oblivion is a HARD title to compete with.

Yeah, I'd stand by that statement. It's all personal preference of course and I am a fan of racing:) But there is alot more to the game then the demo. I prefer it to Oblivian which I've played extensively. Game wise, my Wii has been collecting dust since I got the PS3 and my 360 friends now come to my place instead of me going to theirs for gaming. People knock the lack of games for PS3, but I don't think they really know what's out there. In regards to Motor Storm, don't judge the game until you've played the big rig.

Did just order a BD-P1200 a couple of nights ago.Yep I'm on my second PS3 due to failure...and as soon as a full featured BD stand alone comes out the PS3 goes on Ebay...I am not a gamer. :)
Maybe he prefers a true 1080p output and better PQ.
Since when did the PS3 not have true 1080p output or great PQ?
Welcome to the club paulstachniak. :)
invadergir 05-01-07, 02:20 AM I too am on my 2nd PS3 20GB system. My original died on me after 2.5 weeks of use. Went to play Monster House and the system wouldn't power on at all. Sadly the coffin took 4 days to get to my house, but thankfully it only took 3 days for a new system to be sent back.
Anyways congrats on going Format neutral. Casino Royale is an awesome choice and don't forget to pre-order your Pirates of the Caribbean movies too. Which i shall be doing after i pay off my CC.
Also check out your local (if you have one) BeatGoesOn store (http://www.beatgoeson.com/) or the site for some good deals on used Blu-ray/HD-DVD movies as well

Since never. I own the PS3. I think it's awesome, but it's insulting to the Sony player, when comparing the picture quality. It's noticably better than the PS3. And the PS3 outputs 1080p/60 not 1080p/24. The PS3 does annihilate everything in terms of loadtime.
Welcome, glad you saw the light :D
Welcome to the wonderful world of supporting HD, not formats... :)
How exactly did BD become the "sell out" position? I prefer the term "smart, intelligent informed consumer".
Beats me. Good on the guy for going neutral but people who go neutral are essentially realising what most of us figured out over a year ago, that Blu-ray would offer us pretty much everything we wanted.

The PQ is NOT noticeably better than the PS3! In fact, I'd say they are equal. no better no worse. I have a ps3 and my neighbour has the Sony standalone. We did numerous a/b test on each other's systems and we can't see a single difference. Even casual observers (friends and family) couldn't tell the difference. But yeah, there is no contest with the load time--PS3 all the way
Fettastic 05-01-07, 11:13 AM Check the firmware. The BDP-S1 is notorious for having java problems.

it's my fault for not putting quotation marks around the word 'sold out'. i meant it to be tongue-in-cheek, rather than offensive.
an update however, looks like the right side surround analogue output may be broken. doesn't connect very well with whatever cable I attach to it. gonne investigate it more later today, see if this is really a problem with the unit, or two bad cables.
restart 05-01-07, 03:58 PM Welcome. Enjoy the great blu-ray releases. :)
UxiSXRD 05-01-07, 05:07 PM If you have a projector or 24p display, BDP-S1 should be great. I would be worried about it's longevitity and ability to conform to future BD specs (Live, etc).
The PS3, OTOH, already meets and easily exceeds the hardware requirements of every BD spec proposed. If you have a 60hz HDTV and an HDMI receiver, then the PS3 will prove superior over just about every other player out there in every way that matters (speed, load times, responsiveness, AQ), etc. PQ should be a wash with no advange either way other than judder (which requires a 24p display, of course).
