Just when we were ready to pronounce traditional movie theaters dead and buried, they may be in the early stages of a very strong comeback. We received an email from listener Darin about some work Peter Jackson, the director of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, had done using a new camera from a company simply called Red. We talk about what impact this can have on both the cinema and the home theater.

The reason to go to the theater is better picture and sound quality. As the article says film is already 4K with more color depth. Theaters need to go with 4K digital projectors, and 4k cameras for movie making, to show the quality they have now if they want to go digital. My home theater, and no one who doesn't have a home 35mm film theater, can't compete with the theater. To say one doesn't go to the theater because their home setup is just as good is delusional.

We are not saying that our home theater is as good as a properly maintained 35mm film theater. Please don't take what we are saying out of context. We have worked in many theaters and have seen what happens to the film over time. The print gets old and degraded and no longer looks as good as DVD let alone next generation discs. Add in the fact that you may have people chatting away sitting next to you and throw in the price of the movie with popcorn and drinks then you see where we are coming from. Its the experience!

We talked about a cinema being built in Chicago that promises a better experience from all aspects except price. We are willing to spend the money if the experience is good. That's all we are saying.
