View Full Version : blurring on 1080i?
Charlie97L 05-01-07, 05:13 PM i just picked up casino royale for BD for ps3, and i watched it this weekend on my panasonice ae900u projector (hdmi connection).
i felt like it was blurring a lot, something i have never noticed before with my SD movies (playing at 720p), or any sports or HD movies on cable.
would 1080i tend to blur more than 720p? i'm going to try out 720p and see if i can see a big difference tonight, but i just wanted feedback in case anyone else has had a similar issue.
i don't get blurring on any games on my 360 or ps3, everything is super smooth.
thanks!
PS3 won't output Blu-ray's at 720P

My 1080i rear projection Sony is rock solid with no bluring...maybe you have a setting wrong on your projector...but you might just have to break down and get a......
Get a 1080p projector...damn i know this sound cruel...but if you want to best possible picture in bluray you really need to go 1080p...

But SD movies on an upscaling DVD player will.
As for the question, film transfers can look blurry regardless of what resolution they are, and both deinterlacing and scaling can look blurry if not done well. I can't say I've ever seen your model of projector in action though, or Casino Royale on Blu-ray for that matter, I've no clue as to which of those factors could be contributing to the blurriness you note.

It doesn't sound cruel at all, and know this does sound cruel, but what you said simply sounds ignorant. To get the best possible picture from Blu-ray you'll also need to get best possible color accuracy, best possible contrast ratios, the best possible black levels and such; and when it comes right down to it, you can get an even better picture with good upscaling to an even higher resolution projector while you are at it.
Of course that means dropping a small fortune on whatever happens to be the best all around projector of the moment. If you don't care to do that you are left with making some compromises wherever is most suited to you, and in many cases that can mean favoring other factors over at 1080p display resolution.

.
I realize that but he was saying tonight he was going to compare SD movies at 720p and a bluray at 720p. I'm saying he won't be able to with a PS3.
kylebisme 05-01-07, 07:33 PM Ah, my bad. I see where you got that impression, good point.
eddy_winds 05-01-07, 08:33 PM NP here on 1080i
Toshiba 65H82
;)
hotchip 05-01-07, 09:22 PM try turning dobly noise reduction off, this is sometimes a major contributor to blurring. Otherwise i have np watching casino royale on ps3 w/Mitsubishi HC1100 via hdmi at 1080i
Charlie97L 05-01-07, 11:29 PM thanks for the tips guys... i think NR is on. i'll try that.
:)
i noticed it didn't do 720p.
heh.

i don't think it was a bad comment. i just got the ae900 last august, and it's been amazing. i'm going to hang in with it until the RS1 comes down in price to around 3K. i am picking up a 1080p (likely westinghouse or sony) display this summer (~42-47")... so that will hold me over. i'm blown away with the projector, but as it's getting a boatload of use, I may stay with it (being a cheaper model) for everyday use, rather than something like the RS-1, which i would feel would on be ok for serious movie watching/gaming.

I was not trying to be all technical...it was a quick comment...I know its all about the black levels and deep color capibilities. I was not trying to get him to drop a fortune of chedder into his setup.....
