hey guys, I'm looking for a nice, small(ish) HD tube for my room, any suggestions for something under or around $300? I was thinking one of the toshiba-orion models, I currently have an old 13" orion tv and it has served me well for 10 years. I know the Orion-manufactured toshibas are not that great but I've had a good experience with Orion stuff so I'd buy one.

suggestions anyone? I'd prefer a nice, small LCD but I don't think I'll find anything decent for $300

Some Walmarts still have a Sanyo 30" widescreen for $398. Maybe you could wangle a discount for a floor display set. The model number is HT30746. The Walmart id number is 000525628

Sony makes good 20" and 24" Trinitrons that are in your price range. I don't think either has a digital tuner though, so you may have to set aside some cash for that.

I think Wal Mart also has some 27 inch "ILO" models that include a digital tuner for around $200, but I doubt the quality is very good, and you may not have room for something that size. I went from 14" Toshiba in my bedroom to a 20" Sony Trinitron and am quite happy. I don't think there's any need for HDTV with a screen that size, you'd never notice a difference.

Sony *used* to make Trinitrons. No more. It would be hard to find a 20" or 24" anywhere but locally used or eBay. Some Circuit City stores still have 27" in stock and on sale for $279. KD27FS170. I have one and it's a great set. OTA digital is as close as you're going to get to HD without an HD set.

The Sony 27FS170 is now back to regular price at CC. Perhaps it will be back on sale again next week (just like the 34XBR970 returned to full price for a week).

I was thinking about getting one these, but started reading the thread here about them. Everyone seems to be complaining about these green blobs that appear on the screen that require tilting the TV from side to side before they will go away.

Kinda soured me on the idea of getting one, but really like the price for a 16:9 HDTV with ATSC tuner. I'm almost tempted to take my chances, but my local Wal Mart only has one of these in stock, and it's an open-box return. Not a good sign.

also, the 20" trinitron sounds great to me. I don't care that much about HD, since like you said at small sizes it won't make much of a difference, but I really want an ATSC tuner. I hooked up a homemade antenna I built to my friend's 42" samsung plasma and got 1080i flawlessly..... 36 miles away from the tower! as long as you faced the antenna the right way, there was no pixelation, snow, were no glitches, and no weird squares at all. that same station also broadcasts in analog but the signal is horribly ghosted and snowy with my homebuilt antenna when recieving the analog signal.

did sanyo discontinue the walmart set? I live really close to a tv assembly plant of theirs here in the US and it would be a sad day for CRT's if the last HD set made in the US was discontinued.

I'm not sure what Wal-Marts return policy on open box items are, I know that seems like a waste of time. Buying a TV, trying it, disliking it, returning it. But that is a very good price for a 30" Widescreen

[QUOTE=did sanyo discontinue the walmart set? I live really close to a tv assembly plant of theirs here in the US and it would be a sad day for CRT's if the last HD set made in the US was discontinued.[/QUOTE]

I checked the walmart.com website a couple weeks ago, and the Sanyo 30" widescreen was listed but it said "out of stock". So I went to my local store and they checked their inventory. They were supposed to have 5 in stock but could not find any of them (?). I went back this past weekend and saw only the one open-box unit.

So I guess they are still selling these, but the low price leads me to believe this may be a close-out because this is the only HD CRT they still sell.

If you want one of the 20 or 24" Sony Trinitrons, check Sears. They have a slow turnover and are most likely to still have discontinued products and/or display models still in stock. Plus their return policy is pretty generous IIRC.

That Sharp sounds nice, but I'm leaning more towards a tube. The only LCD I'd consider is this beautiful new Samsung that just came out, 20" I think, I saw it at Sears last weekend. However, it's in the over $500 range which is a little over my budget at the moment (poor high school student here) so I'm thinking I might put off buying a new TV until after summer once I have some more money. I've been reading reviews of the Toshiba-Orions and they just don't seem so appealing anymore, with the white glow and bad geometry. I also took apart the 13" Orion and found out the tube was made by Toshiba (wtf?), the sticker on the tube said ORION but in little letters at the bottom it said "Made by Toshiba, Indonesia" so I guess Toshiba used to make some of Orion's tubes, now it's the other way around. No wonder that TV always looked so damn good! Anyway, I think I'll wait until after summer and try and go for the Sanyo if it hasn't been discontinued. It's a little big but I could figure out a way to fit it in.

13" Orion TVs have a low repair rate and is just as good as Panasonic, according to Consumer Reports, so it's no surpirse here.

I also have an old Orion-made VCR still running fine after 22 years. It's below in the stand right now with my Orion 27" SDTV CRT.

Hey guys, went to Wal-Mart today and they are liquidating tons of CRT TV's, several ILO 27", some old RCA's, some 20" Phillips, but most importantly....

The Sanyo HD Tube is GONE, including the DISPLAY MODEL. I guess it was discontinued then..... oh well. They used to have an RCA HD tube too, but that is also gone. I was/am a hardcore CRT fan but I saw a very nice 20" (I think) Sanyo LCD that had a very nice picture, was just the size I was looking for, and was decently priced at $500. I'm going to wait until after summer to buy it, using the money from my summer job (poor high school student). Thanks guys.
