Hey guys, while playing DVD's on the PS3, I have been having some problems.
Basically, I have a lot of home movies and such that I burn to DVD. Now every time I try to play those DVD's, the PS3 almost always (probably about 85-90% of the time) encounters a few hiccups while trying to play them; the disc will freeze, skip around, and once it even randomly rewound and fast forwarded through some segments. I have tried different brands of DVD-R's, different software (Nero and Roxio) and I always burn at low speeds. When I play these DVD's on a standalone player, they work just fine.
My PS3 has no problems playing Blu-Rays, games, or Hollywood DVDs - just the ones I try to burn myself.
Have any of you encountered similar issues? If you regularly play your own DVD's, what brand DVD do you use, what recording software, and on what burn settings?
Thanks.
I've played some mp4 files off of burned DVDs with no problems. I use Taiyo Yuden 8x or 16x DVD-Rs burned at 6x with dvd+rw-tools for Linux.
You might have better luck just extracting your video from the DVD and losslessly moving it into an .mpg container. Those play back very well on the PS3 and you can store them on FAT USB hard disks or burn them to data DVDs.

I have been having a few problems with this also...my home video's on dvd+r are randomly fast forwarding at times. The ps3 never did this before a certain update so right now I am assuming a firmware update caused this issue. Sometimes it does it sometimes not...I am ready to call Sony on this issue and see what they say..you should too. I have not gotten around to trying dvd-r's though..but from your post I assume they will do this also.
Edit: The ps3 specs state that it plays..dvd-r/rw...dvd+r/rw...you should not have to convert the dvd's to anything else. Like I said..I had no problems in the beginning...but one of the firmware upgrades caused the problem..imo...I do not know which one..anywhere from 1.5 to present.

I use DVD-Rs and have not had any issues (other than improper aspect ratio sometimes). I am just using whatever was cheapest at bestbuy when I needed more.
I have not used dvd-r as storage media to play MP4s, I have an external HD for that. Everything I have burned/played should be seen as a regular DVD (video ts etc...)
My DVD's are usually .ts files as well.
tingham, I think you might be right about the firmware update...I don't recall this happening after I initially got the PS3 (launch), but probably only within the last couple of months. Earlier today I got around to trying out two backups of Hollywood DVDs (Night at the Museum and Freedom Writers) using Memorex brand DVD-R on slow speed, and both movies played without a hitch. Hopefully that's going to solve the issue. Maybe you should try them out, it might work for you.

I have tons of homemade video dvd's..and they are all on either Verbatim or TDK..some are +r and some -r. They play fine on all my other dvd players. They were all burned at 4x or 8x..It is not really a high priority to have them play on the ps3..but I certainly want to have that option in the future..I will get around to calling sony and let them know of this issue..and see what they say. I am pretty sure that a update caused it. It is strange though..sometimes I can watch one... no problems at all...other times they automatically ff. The discs are fine..very few scratches..I will keep trying them and see what happens..hope you have better results with yours also.
Yeah, will do...
Hey, just noticed you're from Philly...that's kind of funny, I go to Drexel in University City.
