Moderator's note: I have spent several hours carefully reviewing the posting rules this morning and there is nothing in this thread against the TOS. This thread has nothing to do with AACS but rather is about the marketing efforts of the HD-DVD promotion group and is relevant to the High def media discussion. Parts of this story have made the front page of the BBCnews website and drudgereport.com as well as other major news outlets including the front page at Google. This is a major development in the format war.

_______________________________________________

Many news stories have been published in the past two days alleging that Digg.com founders have accepted money from the HD-DVD promotion group with an agreement that news stories at the site would be slanted in a pro-HDDVD way. Some have called this HD-DVD's own "phase hydra" and others have called it much worse.

For instance what if CNN started changing the news based on who gave it advertising dollars? There would be a public outcry. Many are speculating that this has happened on the Internet's most popular news site: Digg.com.

This thread is an opportunity for members to discuss how HD-DVD's own "phase hydra" will effect the format war.

Alternatively, who wants to bet money that Digg.com removing articles discussing illegal crack codes has absolutely NOTHING to do with the fact that there is HD DVD advertising involved and has absolutely EVERYTHING to do with not wanting to get sued?

This is a molehill. But everyone's trying desperately to construct a mountain.

They might be. I am not saying that Sony is perfect, they are FAR from it. However "phase hydra" was discussed here for weeks. It is only fair that we also get a glimpse into the behind the scenes marketing efforts of the HD-DVD promotion group as well.

It seemed to me that they were up front about HD DVD being a sponsor, so it was not an under-the-table deal. Also, back in the day DeCSS got a lot of legal takedown notices sent because of it, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the new code causing the same furor. As far as HD DVD slant goes, I think that is more the individual diggers posting untrue or inaccurate stories at times.

If we are going to waste thread space on baseless specualtion, many have stated that the "revolt" that went on at digg appeared to be a coordinated effort. The original hydra?

I agree. Digg took it down because having keys out in the open on a site will most definetly get them sued. Fatwallet was sued for having ads for Black Friday up on it's website 2 weeks before the official release several years back. If you want to have keys out on a reputable website, be prepared to be sued or take it down. Which do you think he chose? AVS knows that, that's why there is no talk of any software or hardware piracy of any kind on these boards. To say they took money and slanted the news is just low-down.

Not only that, the people on the board became angry that he took the keys down and posters started to hide the keys into their posts. For example, they claimed that when they accessed the Digg.com website, they kept getting an Error that spelled out the KEYS. No choice but to take everything down.

I'm not trying to sidetrack this thread or get it deleted. *You're* talking about how this story is all over various sites. The story is about the codes.

If you want to talk exclusively about "censorship of regular stories about HD DVD", can you provide some proof/examples? Otherwise, what the heck are we discussing?

Again, they were secretly posting the keys in their posts. They came up with clever ways to explicitly post the keys in messages. Had no choice but to take it down.

As of yet, there have been exactly zero "regular" HD DVD stories cited as proof. The only HD DVD stories that were removed were the ones that dealt with the code.

Do any such stories exist?

Its logical to close threads that spread copyprotected material. Nothing hydra about this at all, at least from the HD DVD side...

Boy, you just can't get it can you? Phase Hydra was about people on Sony's payroll spreading misinformation about BD/HD DVD, or trying to discredit HD DVD online, wherever they could.

Digg has already responded as to why they pulled the AACS code. They got a letter from AACS saying it was violating their intellectual property, and t hey threatened legal action.

In what idiot's world are these two the same thing?

That isn't evidence. I can link to stories that talk about UFOs, but that isn't evidence.

You obviously consider this "censorship" to be super-important. How about showing me a single ounce of evidence that a HD DVD post (not dealing with these codes) was censored.

A lot of the ones that I saw yanked were idiots who were trying to get the codes posted through other means, either by saying "Hey, I'm getting error #(code). Can someone help?" or by discussing the issue and linking to screen shots that included the code.

I've seen ZERO evidence of something not code-related being touched.

There will be censorship of any source code, copyrights, security keys and the likes at any reputable website that doesn't want to get sued. If you ever get the source code of Windows and post it on any reputable web site or news site, before you even hit the "enter" key, you will have a cease and desist from MS or worse, you'll have someone serving you a lawsuit on Microsoft's behalf.

I'm wondering how long this thread will last. The HD-DVD zealots made sure the last one (edit: two that I'm aware of that were full of HD-DVD fans crying foul in it) didn't last long.

Of course is not shocking that HD-DVD is paying to have information sensored.

I for one noticed a HUGE influx of fud and hd-dvd fanboy posting right around the time those same people started posting about blu-ray's "hydra", which never really happened at all. a new tactic seems to be a lot of new avs users who claim "format neutrality" with sigs showing they own a bunch of both blu-ray and hd-dvd, yet all they do is flame and troll blu-ray.

seems ironic.

The last one had screenshots of the damn codes! That's the EXACT reason that this crap is getting yanked from Digg. It's not 'censorship'. It's the law.

I'll ask again: Can some provide information about a single posting that was *not* related to the illegal codes that was "censored" by Digg?

No they didn't since you are going to post FUD then cry when people call you on it let me see if I can break it down to a level you understand

1) Users post HD DVDs AACS encryption keys on digg
2) Digg receives a cease and desist letter notifying them they will suffer legal action if they keep articles up with AACS keys.
3) Digg pulls the AACS digg articles.
4) Hacker underground stage a "digital Boston tea party". They begin posting AACS keys in random articles, creating new fake HD DVD articles and putting keys in the comments, etc.
5) Digg responds by closing down any news post that has AACS keys.
6) Hacker kids get all pissed that their "free speech" is trampled and begin making this into a controversy. They spin this into a digg and HD DVD secret alliance.
7) AVS user now drags this message board into the same crap digg is in. Brings up this amazing "new" revelation about HD DVD censorship campagin.
8) namechamps has to post 8 steps to explain the situation to original poster.

Simple story. Digg decided they didn't want to get sued and forced off the net so they complied with an request that in the US has a legal standing and precedent. Little hacker kids who have nothing to lose got sad that they can't use digg to steal moves. Bluboys now spin this as anti HD DVD propaganda. Move along. Nothing to see here. The sad truth is Bluray would have same problem except it is too expensive for most people to hack.

Unless original poster can prove there is any censorship going on I request the mods lock the thread or at least change title.

Exactly, Mods notified of baseless accusation and links provided lead to AACS security keys, which is a no-no here.
