It is worth getting a blu ray for this movie alone in my opinion. I can only imagine how many copies it will sell. I have not seen a more gorgeous looking animated movie.
ryoohki 05-02-07, 07:16 PM Whoo hoo. i'll save it in mp4 for my PS3! THanks!
ToEhrIsHuman 05-02-07, 08:57 PM Yes...it looks spectacular on my PS3 as well in 1080p...and check out the high AVC bit-rate to boot! It was in the high 30s for the 30 seconds or so I checked (whereas most 1080p trailers downloaded over the Internet are generally around 10mbps.)
I have downloaded the trailer this morning. It was much better than the first trailer ...it gave the basic premise of the movie. The trailer was very funny and I can't wait to see it in the theater. A blogger said he saw it and thought it was better than The Incredibles.

The one I linked is a whole sequence from the movie by the way not the trailer. If you havent seen it i would highly recommend it :)
I think I have done it before, but I have forgotten how to convert .mov files to .mp4. Anyone have any tips?

I have quicktime pro yet I can not get it to convert the file to a mp4 without it compressing it to hell or giving me an error. What am I doing wrong?

wildfire99 05-02-07, 11:27 PM Definitely an impressive clip. I think I'll be picking it up. Great sequence, good marketing tool. Hopefully this catches on.
yakkosmurf 05-02-07, 11:44 PM That's a cool page. I'm downloading several right now. Thanks for sharing.
nharmon91 05-03-07, 12:01 AM WOW I love Pixar

Hmmm, I'll download it to my PS3 :-)
bdshort 05-03-07, 02:03 AM I showed the trailer to a female friend of mine, and she is totally not interested in this movie :( And she's a huge fan of a lot of the other Pixar movies! Sigh...
I just finished copying the clip to my PS3, so I'm off to watch it!
And I just watched it... Now I REALLY want to see this movie, both sequences were great!
shadowrage 05-03-07, 02:15 AM I want Wall-E on BD. And Toy Story 1-3.

Well it does star a rat. Having it scurry around people food, even though it's a cute rat, is still a bit gross.
I think this is the first time in the history of cinema that the leading part of a movie is a RAT ...unless you count GoodFellas or some other mob movies.
methos75 05-03-07, 08:38 AM What about you know Flushed Away or the Secret of Nimh, pretty sure they were all about Rats.
Kevin12586 05-03-07, 08:47 AM Can I just download it directly to my PS3 and play it?
SheepFactory 05-03-07, 12:22 PM nah you cant. You have to convert it to mp4.

Is using Quicktime Pro the only way to convert it?
SheepFactory 05-03-07, 01:39 PM No there are a lot of conversion software available that can do it. Google for mov to mp4 and it should come up with links.
Is using Quicktime Pro the only way to convert it?
There are many ways but Quicktime Pro is the easiest and most accessible I think ...if you can depart with $29 that is. :D
denness544 05-03-07, 02:28 PM What software do you guys use? I googled it but there are so many. Some of the shareware limits to 30% of the file or 5 mins.

If you have a mac, use ffmpegX. Its free and its very powerful. I can't recommend any program on the pc side that is not free. There are plenty of commercial and shareware available. Nero does a pretty decent job of converting. I am not sure there is a pass through function. You might have to transcode it again ...which is a pain.

The mac program is here:

denness544 05-03-07, 02:51 PM I have a PC. Oh well. My friend is coming over and he said he doesn't think he'll notice the difference of Blu-ray so I'm going to show him some movies along with Ratatouille.
darkjedi664 05-03-07, 03:16 PM Maxing out at only 9mbit, there's TONS of banding problems. Movie does indeed look very good :) Can't wait.
ibglowin 05-03-07, 04:57 PM iSquint is free and can convert a .mov to MP4 and almost anything else for that matter.
Not sure if they have something for PC users or not. I would think you could find something if you Googled it a bit.
Neo1965 05-03-07, 05:08 PM What about you know Flushed Away or the Secret of Nimh, pretty sure they were all about Rats.
Were they mice or rats? I thought mice were cute and noble and rats are always evil. Like elves vs orcs. ;)
ToEhrIsHuman 05-03-07, 07:40 PM If you have Windows try freeware YAMB:
YAMB (http://yamb.unite-video.com/)
It converts many (including the topic of this thread), but not all, MOV files to MP4. If it goes thru the processing of streams, even if it ultimately says "muxing failed", check the destination directory for your MP4 file (which more often than not will be there and will play fine on the PS3.)
kenliles 05-03-07, 08:13 PM I showed the trailer to a female friend of mine, and she is totally not interested in this movie :( And she's a huge fan of a lot of the other Pixar movies! Sigh...
Tell your female friend she's (only) one in a million....

Flushed away was about pet rats. However they don't look anything like rats. NIMH starred a field mouse, but she rescued lab rats (who didn't look a ton like rats either). What does it for Ratatouille is the great 3D fur rendering.
But is Remy a Norway Rat or a Roof Rat? People want to know... :)
Kram Sacul 05-03-07, 09:34 PM The detail in the clip is pretty impressive. For those that have Happy Feet how do you think it compares?
darkjedi664 05-03-07, 09:35 PM At least on the PC side, you can rename the mov to mp4 and it'll work just fine, AND get picked up by h264 accelerators :P
darkjedi, thanks for the tip! in Quicktime I couldn't even play the 720p clip smoothly. Using the mp4 extension I can *almost* play the 1080p clip smoothly (chokes a little every few seconds though)
darkjedi664 05-03-07, 10:12 PM Seriously, why are you using Quicktime??? Use MediaPlayer Classic and FFDshow if you don't have PowerDVD to use it's h264 decoder.
Interesting when the guy is talking at the beginning and a bit later on it pixelates like I am watching an HD broadcast, but when the actual film is on it is fine.
wildfire99 05-04-07, 03:59 AM The detail in the clip is pretty impressive. For those that have Happy Feet how do you think it compares?
Happy Feet is by location somewhat featureless. It has a lot of detail but there are only so many shades of white you can produce. The demo clip of "Ratatouille" by contrast has a phenomenal amount of detail, and I found myself taken out of the clip several times just to marvel at the smaller things, like light reflection and scattering in the hand-beaten copper surfaces in the kitchen, the well-rendered depth in the fur, and the fearless use of motion and depth in the scene to produce a feel of speed and importance (something that isn't done as well in "Happy Feet", though again part of that is the nature of the location).
I hope the rest of the film is done as well. I was actually wondering what studio created it, because whoever did it knows their stuff, but I just realized it's a Pixar film. Doh.
I wish I could get 'Incredibles' or 'Cars' on some HD format just so I can marvel at the cleanliness of the "print".
darkjedi, actually I was using VLC but when playing back this file with the .mov extension it came out all garbled. Even quicktime did not work until I downloaded the latest version (I guess new codec or something). Then I tried to rename per your trick, and it works! (now it actually runs through zoomplayer, since I guess this is the default file association for mp4.) I'm pretty sure I have ffdshow installed as well (from some time back).
ps: I'm happy I can once again avoid quicktime. Horrible, bloated player...
dtsfanoh 05-04-07, 09:23 AM I downloaded this Ratatouille sneak peek on my mac mini which is integrated into my HT set-up and it looks awesome on my 103 in diag screen with a Mits HC3000U FP! No need to convert (of course) to MPEG-4 since it is a QT file. Great trailer website, BTW.
can i convert the mov file to mp4 using the transport change in quick time pro? [I can't remember exactly what its called, i'm at work] it has worked for a few, but newer clips don't work via this method. I have trouble finding anything that converts it from mov to mp4 without causing lots of pixelation after the conversion. I do have sorenson squeeze, but i have had no luck getting it to output mp4 at that resolution for the ps3.
Kevin12586 05-04-07, 01:23 PM So I downloaded the file to my pc, changed the file type from.mov to .mp4. Once I transfer this to a flash usb drive do I just insert it into my PS3 and the PS3 will see the files or do I need to do something else such as create specific folders and save it there?
bdshort 05-04-07, 01:36 PM wildfire: Cars is supposedly on its way. I sure hope we see the rest of the Pixar films soon, especially The Incredibles and Finding Nemo. Though I must say again, after seeing the Ratatouille clip, this looks like it could be Pixars best film to date.

Onkyo10 05-04-07, 04:05 PM there is this soft which works fine in conversion MP4
http://www.mp4converter.net/mp4-converter-win.html
you can download the freeware and that's ithttp://www.mp4converter.net/images/products/mp4-converter-screen.gif
In the profile, you can directly select the final format you want such as PS3 video 1080P or 720p...really easy and friendly user
then when finished, you copy it into USB drive, hook up the PS3...the PS3 won't see it by itself but just go to the USB drive then push on button "triangle" and select show all files...PS3 will show up the MP4 file , select it to play or copy it toPS3 file...that's it
enjoy :)
Icemage 05-04-07, 04:25 PM Just watched this on my PC. Just... wow. Incredible animation from Pixar Studios once again!
I especially loved the technical ingredients featurette ...the way they render water behavior is beyond words.
Kevin12586 05-04-07, 04:36 PM Thanks Onkyo, I think I will give it a try :)
Bruin711 05-05-07, 02:50 AM How big is this mp4 when it is done converting? I am afraid it wont fit on my usb key, is there any other way to transfer it from my pc to my ps3?
Onkyo10 05-05-07, 02:51 AM it's really worthy a try...the movie is played in 1080P and sound 5.1...Rreally great! that can push me to purchase a soft! :)
Onkyo10 05-05-07, 02:56 AM How big is this mp4 when it is done converting? I am afraid it wont fit on my usb key, is there any other way to transfer it from my pc to my ps3?
use 1 G key is enough!
Bruin711 05-05-07, 03:06 AM Any other way? I dont have a 1 gb usb key.
Onkyo10 05-05-07, 03:12 AM anyway, the trial sofware only allows you to encode 5mn of the movie, thus about 79K so128MB is enough!
ibglowin 05-05-07, 09:12 AM How do you get a USB drive to show up on your PS3? I have the file converted to MP4 via Quicktime and I transfered the file to the drive (700MB) but I have plugged my 2GB Sony Micro drive into every USB port on the front of my PS3 and I don't see any icon anywhere under any of the Sony PS3 menus?
Onkyo10 05-05-07, 11:23 AM I have explained, you got to point on USB drive then press button triangle on PS3 pad...PS3 will show up two option, select show all files...it will appear...otherwise, PS3 won't show anything automatically up

if you place MP4 files in a directory called "/video/" on your memory card/USB drive the files should appear without having to search for them.
kingknog 05-06-07, 03:35 PM For Windows, I use PS3 Video 9 to convert videos for my PS3. The great thing is, if you use the "Quicktime HD MOV Input" profile, it will merely pass the video through untouched, and allow you to convert the audio to your liking. It took just under a minute to convert the Ratatoullie clip. The program is also good for converting .mkv tv shows for use on the ps3 as well.
ryoohki 05-06-07, 05:01 PM You can use Red Kawa PS3 File Server if you want to transfert.. it's a little Messy to install and config (Really basic) but it work great... you can transfert any video or audio to the PS3 and even QUEUE files..
ibglowin 05-07-07, 09:07 AM Like I said, the USB drives are NOT showing up anywhere on the PS3. I have tried two different ones now. I have sucessfully transfered pictures via Memory Stick in the top slot in the past but USB drives are not showing up under any of the PS3 icon/headings.

FAT32
If they were formatted with NTFS or formatted by a Mac (hpfs?) the PS3 may not be able to read them.
So how were they formatted?
ibglowin 05-07-07, 10:19 AM Format is showing up as FAT32.

umeng2002 05-08-07, 05:41 AM It was nice, but it was only 9 Mbps and there was some banding. For some reason the director commentary was more stressful and looked worse than the actual clip

Yeah I found that too! It was jerking but the actual clip was fine.

When you use PS3 Video 9 to convert it using "Quicktime HD MOV Input" profile where does it go to when done? Also how would you then convert the audio and is this necessary for playback on the ps3?

Well first the quicktime trailers are annoying in that they keep using TV levels (16-235) instead of computer levels (0-255). For the choppiness, either they really screwed the pooch going from 29.97->23.98p, or they used the wrong field dominance when deinterlacing that video clip. But it's definately not good looking.
