First off, I have to say that I have the following for my HT setup:

tv: Samsung LN-S4695D 46" 1080p LCD
avr: Denon 1706
speakers: 5.1 setup Polk Audio RTi series

I currently own a 360, and I love it. The following lists are my Buy / Don't Buy lists:

Reasons to Buy:
1. Blu-Ray movie playback
2. Folding@Home

Reasons Not to buy:
1. Own a 360, could just get HD-DVD add on.
2. Won't play games most likely, since I have 360.

So, basically I'm looking at the PS3 for Blu-Ray movies and for Folding@Home as a side benefit. I'll probably never buy a game for it, since I'm perfectly happy with the 360's games and the Live service. I am partly interested in the future Home service, but really, this will be my next gen movie player.

Should I spend the money (even the 20gb version will cost me $500 + service plan) or should I just get a HD-DVD add on for the 360?

I also do like Sony's support of Linux on the PS3.

Thanks for helping.

Two things that you need to be aware of:

1. Folding@Home can be installed on a computer. Link (http://folding.stanford.edu/)

2. The 20GB has been discontinued. Link (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6168876.html)

the ps3 will fold better than any cheaper PC, even better than midrange PC's, and it will also use less power.

the ps3 is a great folding machine, especially compared to anything in its price range. it is also a very good blu-ray player. as i see it, if any format is going to survive, its going to be blu-ray. so for the purposes you mentioned, the ps3 is great... its a very reliable and great all around machine. but its up to you to justify the purchase for those reasons alone.

i have a hard time believing NONE of the ps3's games interest you. i'm sure there will be some games that come out for the ps3 that interest you, and having both systems will give you the best of both worlds.

-blu ray
-piano black finish
-sixaxis controller
-online gaming
-resistance
-motorstorm
-a super computer for 600 dollars vs the usual million dollars due to CELL processor
-anything else? it does everything minus cooking.

Yes, I know the 20gb is discontinued and that F@H can be run on computers. There are still a few stores around here with the 20gb version.

Also, I forgot to mention I own a PSP already.

Get it. A well built piece of high tech tech.

To start a thread like this you obviously already want to buy the ps3 so why should we convince you. Go get one you wont regret it. It feels good to own the best of both worlds, and blu ray playback is handy. Resistance is a good game, but almost like every other fps on the market imho. There will be good games on this machine and once you have one you'll find yourself going to stores looking for ps3 games over 360. Just get one.

Please don't buy one until you don't have to be convinced to do it.

The last thing we need around here is someone else complaining about the $600 they wasted on a PS3.
