You are all going to want to kill me now. Before I looked in this forum and realized this question was such a hot issue, I am POSITIVE I saw an article giving the price of this unit as $799. This was not speculation, but stated as fact (not a forum posting). I have Googled trying to find this reference, but have so far failed. I will keep looking and post the link if I ever find it. SORRY!

That is a decent price, I'd definetly buy that over a standalone BR player.

And I read it was a 10% premium over the BD-only unit. So if their current player is $799, a combo unit would be $80 more (although I'd round that up to $100). My bet: $899.

I don't care about price, I just want to know a detailed spec list..

The price has yet to be determined by Samsung. It's quite a few months away, so speculating on that is rather pointless. Market forces will be at work here, and Samsung will set the pricing much closer to the time of introduction.

If true, what a shame. That's definitely outside of my price range.

Keep in mind that there will likely be BD player price drops by 4th quarter, so even at 10% over, we could see an $800 price tag.

It's killing me to not jump on the awesome prices of the XA2 but I'm biting my lip and waiting to see what is up with this player for performance and price. I'm also interested to see what other HD or BD players get announced as time goes on.

For now, gotta make myself stick with my A2...

I'm with you, I'm sticking with my A2. I refuse to pay $800 for a Samsung, and the XA2, while the price is good, I think will be matched within a year or so by a player that plays both formats that well. In the meantime, I'm perfectly happy with my A2 and PS3 combo.

I'm not happy with the ps3.

It's so dang big and ugly.

I'm very anxious for this player.

I am looking for a cost effective como unit for my outdoor theater. Hopefully either this or the LG will be cheaper soon...

Below is the OP by Grubert on the Samsung BD-UP5000, I BOLDED the part on pricing.

During an exclusive event Samsung invited us to late February, it unveiled the future hybrid Blu-ray/HD DVD player which will launch in July: the BD-UP5000.

Cosmetically it is very similar to the BD-P1200, the single-format Blu-ray player which will come out in April in the US.

This "Duo HD Player", as the CE maker calls it, will be 100 percent operational as regards interactivity, both on Blu-ray (BD-J) as on HD DVD (HDi).

It will have an HDMI 1.3 output and it will support all the new audio formats.

It will also be possible to setup the HDMI output at 1080/24p, but only for Blu-ray.

"It's because this option is not standardised on HD DVD yet", was the explanation.

For DVD upscaling (to 720p, 1080i or 1080p), Samsung has chosen DCDi processing (as opposed to HQV on the BD-P1200) for "cost reasons".

No final price has been disclosed, but Samsung is looking at a 10 percent price differential over the single-format Blu-ray players.

In other news, the European launch of the BD-P1200 has been delayed without a date.

If this 10% price differential holds true, then I can't see this player having an MSRP of more than $ 650.00. I am sure Samsung is keeping a close eye on the price drops of the HD DVD players & the Blu-Ray players ( Toshiba A2 as low as $299.00 and Pany/ sony coming out with $400.00 players). Buy the time this Samy unit hits the street, prices of current HD DVD & BD players will even be less.
Mark these words people, this player will have a street price of no more than $525.00.[U]

It has been pushed back to the holidays, right?

Maybe I should get an A2 for the time being... If it comes out in July then I will wait.

But what will happen when BD-J is "finalized" in October?

You know the more I think about it, Samsung could release a new player that had the necessary hardware for future requirements for BD-J and then could release a firmware once the finalized version is released. If the hardware is there, software is not really that hard to implement.

Anything above $499.99 at Xmas 2007 is too much IMO, esp. since one can purchase single format players (HD DVD) right now for half that.

But you can't purchase a blu-ray player for half that. So you're not comparing the proverbial 'apples to apples'. Also, you DO realize that Toshiba is losing money on their units, don't you (and just how long do you think they can keep that up)? So I would hardly think that "'Anything above $499.99" would be too much for a dual-format player. Especially since the only currently existing dual-format player has an MSRP of $1200.00 (although I paid $1080.00 for mine. Which means I got it for a dollar per line of resolution ;)).

I guess that issue can be adressed down the road with an eventual firmware update?

So I guess I guess this means we can expect a more costly version later on that uses HQV instead of DCDi? Kind off like the Toshiba HD-A20 versus the Toshiba HD-XA2? But in the reverse, in this case.

Outdoor theater?

That wouldn't work around where I live, with all the bugs and mosquitos, road noise, barking dogs, etc.

How you doing that?

That's an impressive comment actually. I'm not used to seeing any PS3 owner admit an interest in getting rid of it.
Do you pretty much just use it as a Blu-Ray player?

Is this a bad thing? Is the HQV better than the DCDi?

HQV seems to be the KING as of late... I don't care since I will only use the unit for next gen discs anyway...

I might consider buying this after I get my HD-XA2. I'll put this player in the living room and the HD-XA2 stays in my room. I foresee a possible PS3 in my future anyways.
