I've been watching sd on a 27" crt tv for an eon or two. In fact I've even been using rabbit ears since I fired the cable company a few years back. I fully intend to upgrade to an outdoor antenna or even direct tv in the near future. Content will primarily be sd.
Lately I've been looking at the flat panel tv's (37-42") as possible support for the projector for which I am now awaiting delivery. They are a bit lighter than the old crt.
I plan to have the tv set up in front of the pj screen. The tv will either be rolled out of the viewing area or placed face down, when watching movies on the pj. Seating distance is fixed at 10/11 feet. Pj content will be hd and sd via separate HD player.
After reading the many threads discussing 720 and 1080p I'm wondering if I should not just continue with what I have. Although there is the weight issue. Go with 720p, 1080p?
I surely would appreciate your advice on this issue.
Many thanks
Tony

Here's a chart that indicates you may not be able to see a difference
between 720 and 1080 at 10/11 feet for a 37" to 42" screen size.

If you decide to go with a flat panel, I certainly would not advise placing it face down.
Here's a chart
Thanks Flatpanel.
I've seen the charts, and I have looked at the 37's (Visio) and don't really see artifacs at 10 feet. I do sometimes notice scan lines on the 27" crt at 10 ft.
Tony...

Why not?
Will the pixels fall out? ;) :D :D
Seriously...I did speak with a salesman. He didn't think it was a problem.
Hapilly I belong to a forum where I can get the right info.
The other option I've been toying with is the sub.
I'm ordering a SVS PB-12. It would fit on top of the sub. Maybe a mat under it.
Or is this also not good?
Pain in the butt using the living room for a ht, but its all I have. (presently)

Tony Here is what I read about plasma flat panels. "Flat-panel displays are always shipped in the upright position to prevent the solid piece of glass from breaking or popping out of the panel. In most cases, it’s acceptable to gently lay the screen face down to attach the mount, but only for a short period of time. " http://www.proavmagazine.com/Tech_Tips/June20527200521205PM.htm as for LCDs, they do not have a glass face. The plastic may be easily scratched. Your call, of course
Many thanks for the link Nmlobo.
Actually I was in a "Sams Club" when I checked out the Visio LCD.
They were stacked flat. The salesguy said that they ship them that way. Point taken about a glass panel, also a plastic panel re scratches. I keep my comp screen covered when not in use. (cat)
I shot an e-mail off to SVS, to see what they have to say about an LCD on the sub.
Cheers!
Tony
To be fair, consider the LCD to be made of glass (two sheets of .7mm glass). The plastic on the front is the front polarizer and is thinner than Saran Wrap. You can scratch that plastic film with your finger nail.

I'd be more concerned about all the handling. Only 1 slip one time and you can have
damage to the panel. I'm not sure if putting it on the sub is worse for the sub, the
panel, or the sound of the sub. I could see having a table over the sub and putting
the TV on the table / stand. I'm not sure I'd want to put the panel on top of the sub though.
If you're buying a flat panel, why can't you put it on the wall and put it behind
the projector screen? Does the screen roll up? I would consider moving the
projector screen. If you watch the flat panel more than the projector screen, if nothing
else you have less hassle if you move the screen. The pj screen should also be
more durable than the the flat panel tv and lighter.
Thanks guys, appreciate the info.
The pj screen is to be fixed.
Actually when I contacted Ed Mullen at SVS, he also mentioned the table over the sub solution as a good one. He did indicate that on top of the sub, with some padding, may not harm the tv. "May not" may be the operative term here.
In any case I've decided to go with a round sub (20-39 PC-Plus). It weighs less,(I'm not getting any younger) and will probably look better in the room.
For the tv, I will most likely use an articulating arm, either to the ceiling or to the side. There are a couple of versions available from Chief. They are for a 40 inch flat panel with a weight limit of 75 lbs.
Cheers.
