I just got a Philips DVP5892 upcovert DVD player. Is there a reference disc that really shows off the benefits up upconversion.
So far I see no difference.

Most TVs already upconvert to 720p or 1080i, just like upconverting DVD players do. It just depends which device has the better processor. In your case, it looks as though the TV may.... mzupeman 05-03-07, 10:26 PM People claim that they don't nearly the same kind of quality as they do with their Oppo's on other players. I have an Oppo and love it, but I can't comment about other players myself as I decided to go for what seems to be the most popular round here. BUT, just make sure the DVD player is set to output at your TV's native resolution. Also, watch newer high budget flicks. Star Wars Episode III comes to mind. wmcclain 05-04-07, 07:33 AM I just got a Philips DVP5892 upcovert DVD player. Is there a reference disc that really shows off the benefits up upconversion. I don't think quality of the scaling is disc-dependent. Pick a quality titles that you know well, calibrate the display for each input device, and understand that dvds only have 720x480 pixels, so there is only so much that can be done through scaling. Make sure you are using an HD connection method (component, DVI, HDMI) and try the different resolutions of the player. If they all look the same then the player and display have about equal scaling abilities. -Bill |
