Before I preorder, it is it a safe assumption that it is gonna really good quality? Also can an Optical cable support 5.1 LPCM?

Disney is really putting some effort into it, even if you only look at the number of exclusive HD extras they are adding (e.g. BD-J exclusives - http://www.blueboard.com/bluray/movie_listing_bdj.htm), so they most probably are going to go hog wild on the picture and audio quality as well ;-)

These are the two biggest titles yet for Disney. With their track record on titles released already and the fact that each PotC movie will come in 2 discs, they will no doubt put their best efforts into these movies.

You can almost always count on Disney for providing excellent quality Blu-Ray releases, and I'm sure that the POTC releases will be no exception. Disney seems to be guided by the principle of using uncompressed audio tracks in full resolution (meaning 24-bit), as well as excessively high video bitrates, when possible or when it makes sense. I for one applaud them for their work.

I'm more confident about the image quality of the 2nd title than the first. I saw a little bit from a broadcast in Europe of the 2nd one and thought it looked pretty incredible. By the time Disney did the 2nd one they knew the movie was going to be big and I'm guessing they put a lot of care into the image quality.

I would have to agree , I have seen Euro HD versions of both films and DMC was superior in just about every way (video and audio) .

Based upon this trailer for World's End I would have to say that it will probably be one of the most impressive BD titles available .

I can comfortably say that the Pirates movies will be a feast fr the eyes and a treat to the ears.

Based on Disney's past efforts, there is absolutely no way they can screw this one up.

Unless they want to :D .

No. 2ch LCPM only. Say hello to Dolby Digital at 640kbps.

Don't worry buddy. I saw the BD trailer and it was watching King Kong on Blu-ray.

If you can, using 5.1 analog audio outputs will get you full quality PCM in 5.1 channels, but it requires 6 cables to do so. (and a receiver/player with the inputs/outputs)

Disney is not shy about bitrates. Look at their offerings and you'll see their disks give the player a real workout. They have disks that peak well above 40Mbps consistently for MPEG2, VC-1 and AVC.

Otoh, with Disney, you have to wonder how they are getting their digital master made. They can encode video to get very close (close being within limitations of the blu-ray peak bitrate limit) to their digital master, but if the digital master is not perfect......

If the previews are any indication these titles will be top tier!

I'm holding off getting individual releases of POTC in the hope that all three will be released together as a box set later.

Awesome thats great to hear, I was disappointed when I thought I would not be able to have 5.1 LPCM.
Edit: I just realized that I was thinking about my dvd player that has 5.1 output not my ps3, and the disappointment returns. I still get better audio than a regular dvd at least, right?
