Can someone explain what the old players (mostly based on the Sigma 8511 chipset, i.e. the MD-35) do with HD video?

Their specs say they output 720p and 1080i, but the chip can not decode HD content - so they must be upscaling. So how do they treat an HD input, such as an xVid at 720?

What would make you think they can handle it at all???

Can someone with one of this class of player post what these older players do with this sort of content?
