What DVD player should I get for a just purchased Sony 34XS955 CRT TV?
The Denon 2910 and 1920 come to mind. Will I notice the more expensive 2910 or should I go for a HD Player?
What, not one person can make a recommendation? I also have Oppo 971 in mind. This player can be had for CAN$186 delivered. Does it live up to the hype?

If you want to the attention of Denon owners you should put "Denon" in the title of your request.
I don't know what hype you've heard about the Oppo 971 or what you are expecting from your DVD player. I've been happy with my Oppos but the difference between good quality players is not going to be night and day. Subtle differences that are magnified on a projection screen are going to be less evident at 34".
Note that the 971 is no longer manufactured; the 981 is the current Faroudja chip player.
CRT owners sometimes prefer interlaced signals. You might also consider the 970 which has 480i over HDMI and component, as well as upconversion.

Thanks, I will try Denon in my title.
And I also got the two Oppo numbers mixed up. It is the 970 I am considering.

Yes, I will be running upconverted 1080i and not 480p.

I have a Zenith DVB318 which gives me a great PQ over component. I save my HDMI for my Directv H20. Some occasional macroblocking on some films. I had a Q50 before hooked to it but the tv was doing somekind of processing to the 480p signal and there was alot of
shimmering happening. I bought a D1 last month but have switched it to component since it was not passing BTB. Just calibrated it with Avia and it still did not pass BTB on either componont or HDMI. My set is a 36xs955. If anyone is interested PM me. I will also include a burned 2.2 firmare on a CD-R disc. Also free shipping.
