View Full Version : XBR960 or XBR 970 for Xbox360 Elite?
Firstknight_sf 05-04-07, 04:50 AM Which is a better set for an xbox 360 elite? This might be the final factor that makes me decide to get a 960 or 970. I know the 960 plays hd programming better, but what about video games? I have heard they both are about the same for video games.

I play xbox 360 on my xbr960 often. Actually, I am about to go play "Earth defense Force 2017" on my XBOX 360 right now. :) Before I bought xbr 960, I used to game on xbr 970 for about 3 months. I sit about 4 feet from the TV when I game. And there is no doubt to me that xbox 360 games look better on xbr 960 than xbr 970.
Unlike xbr 970, I do not see annoying vertical slits running through the screen on my xbr 960 at this distance. Games on xbr 960 look sharper. The image has more depth. Game menus are also more defined.
Games do look jaggier on xbr960 than xbr 970 though, but that is not a xbr 960 fault.
theroys88 05-04-07, 06:16 AM I have a 36xs955 which has the same guts and SFP tube. For games and HD it gives you more detail but it is much darker then my Panny 34wx54. Colors are subdued and the PQ is not as smooth or punchy. As far as playing games and watching HD I prefer my Panny 34wx54. Resolution is not as good but resolution is only part of the equation. Black levels,
colors, smoothness are also important. You probably still get a 34Wx15 online for a good price and that would be my recommendation for gaming. I haven't seen the 970 but did see that it was around 600 dollars at BB.

Not true in my case.. I have the 970 and don't encounter ANY of those problems. I have calibrated my set, and the picture is extremely crisp, clear and vivid. Halo2, MLB2k7 and such look absolutely stunning on my set. Whenever we play games, watch movies, or watch HDTV it's ALWAYS at my house.
How much price difference is the 960 to 970?

XBR 970 is a fine set. If I did not get xbr 960, I would still be gaming on xbr 970.
I paid $500 for open box xbr 960 and $899 for new xbr970.

Very nice. They now sell them for $599 (970) and that's the only one I could find within 50 miles.. VERY happy with it. :)
Oh, didn't know you had both either. I was wondering what first_knight paid for the 960.. You guys are lucky to have the 960 and 970.. :D

$599 is a steal for xbr 970. :)
Yep, I feel fortunate to have both sets in my apartment.
Firstknight_sf 05-04-07, 07:48 AM Well I can either buy a 970 for $599 brand new or get a open box 960 for $750. That's what they're asking for. I'm sure I can bring the price down some when I show up tomorrow.
Wickerman1972 05-04-07, 07:55 AM Of course the 960 is better but good luck finding one of those. Its picture is much sharper than the 970's or any other CRT for that matter.

For only $150 more, I would probably go for the 960. Although I don't like buying any electronics "used" or "open box".
You also have to consider that TV was probably turned on, 12-14 hours a day, for many many months.. I don't know how things like this affect the tube, but..
I cannot be more happier with the 970, and I'm going to get it calibrated from ISF at the end of the month. I cannot wait.
