View Full Version : Logitech Bluetooth Keyboard Options
rettenhu 05-04-07, 12:39 PM Now that the PS3 supports bluetooth keyboard and mouse pairing, I am looking at one of these two keyboards from Logitech--- diNovo Media Desktop and Cordless Desktop MX5000 Laser. I called Logitech and they could not confirm that either works with the PS3. Instead they directed me to another model with a touchpad which I do not like. Can anybody who has succesfully paired either of these with the PS3, please provide your feedback and comments. While the MSRP for the diNovo is significantly more than the MX5000, Tiger Direct is offering a $30 rebate on the diNovo which makes the cost differential negligible.
If there are other bluetooth desktop recommendations besides those from Logitech, please let me know.
Thanks!
I'm using the MX5000 and I like it. You won't be able to use the advanced features of the keyboard but it works great. The batteries seem to last a long time. I really like the mouse that it came with as I can easily use it on the arm rest of my lazy boy recliner! If you want to use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse you won't go wrong by using the MX5000. I'm sure there are others that work just as well, but the MX5000 is the only one I've used with the PS3.
rettenhu 05-04-07, 07:01 PM Thanks Brakel. Any issues getting the keyboard and mouse paired with the PS3? Would also apprecaite your comments regarding any mouse or keyboard "lag".

I haven't noticed any lag. It was easy to pair. You just go into the add bluetooth devices and the PS3 found 'em right away.
kidgenius 05-05-07, 11:23 AM I didn't even have to "add" mine. I guess that's because I used the dongle which does all the pairing.

Right. When you use the dongle you are using a USB keyboard as far as the PS3 is concerned.

Now? Are you talking native support or with the BT usb dongle? I've had the MX5000 destop with mouse since early december. It has always supported BT keyboards/mice (using the dongle). Works flawlessly. I'll try native and see what's up.
rettenhu 05-05-07, 03:00 PM I was asking about native support without a dongle. Thanks for your feedback re: the MX5000

kylebisme 05-05-07, 03:17 PM I've use the old diNovo setup with the MX900 with my HTPC. The mouse is fine for desktop stuff but not smooth enough for gaming so I have to use a wired mouse for that. The keyboard and media pad are great though. I have paired they keyboard to my PS3 before which worked fine, but I didn't bother to test the mouse.
rettenhu 05-06-07, 09:21 AM Just saw another bluetooth keybord from Logitech that for some reason the Logitech website does not list when you select "bluetooth". It's the diNovo Edge. Looks very sleek and is rechargeable, but it carries a HEFTY price tag of $199.

Is anybody using this with their PS3 and are there any comments other than sticker shock?

statman 05-06-07, 10:51 AM I'm using this PS3 keyboard:

Cheap, works well, and it's also PC compatible.
i can confirm that the logitech dinovo media desktop keyboard works on the ps3 the mouse also works on the ps3 but i don't know about the media pad since i don't even use it.

In your first post when you said Logitech directed you to another keyboard with a trackpad you didn't like, I actually assumed you were talking about the Edge. In my humble opinion, this is by far the best keyboard you can get for the PS3 at the moment...although I *really* would have preferred buying an official bluetooth PS3 keyboard I don't think Sony is ever planning on making one so I bought the Edge.
Comments: It works fine with the PS3's Game OS (XMB), althogh I only tried out browsing the PS3 web browser and navigtaing between the XMB menus for only a few minutes as I have linux installed and use my PS3 primarily for linux these days. You can pair it with the PS3 via bluetooth without the need for the USB dongle (it sitll comes with one though) for true wireless capabilties. There is a problem however outside of the XMB...if you are using linux on the PS3, the touchpad won't work right off the bat (keyboard portion works fine, although the special keys don't do anything)...there's a fix for the touchpad, and while I've been searching all week trying to figure out how to do it, I still don't know how you do it. Just got the Edge a few days ago and it's gorgeous...I'm still too afraid to peel off the protective sticker sheet because I don't want to get the piano black frame dirty... I bought this primarily because I wanted something that looked great and would match the PS3 and the XBR3 TV (I love how the lights turn orange when you start using the touchdisc or press any of the special keys for example), had an excellenet feeling keyboard, had bluetooth and a trackpad (I don't like the idea of having an external mouse just for use with the PS3), and I didn't have to buy batteries for every so often. (The Edge's full charge can last for months before you need to charge it again.) The keys feel very good on the fingers in my opinion. The downside is every time you want to type on it you remember how much it cost and convince yourself to wash your hands every time before using it!
rettenhu 05-06-07, 08:45 PM Thanks for the reply and sorry for the misdirect in my initial post. Logitech directed my to their Media Board keyboard... (same one referenced by statman above)

I am not really a fan of the trackpad but when I saw the Edge I had the same feelings you did and thought I would give it a try. Actually found a few online retailers selling it with a $30 rebate so I ordered it today. If the touchpad doesn't work out there's always the option to add a mouse! I am particularly interested in Linux on the PS3. Can you direct me to any links where "How to install Linux on the PS3 is explained"? I am very computer literate but have no experience with Linux. And, if you determine how to get the touchpad working, I would similarly apprecaite it if you would pass that on.
Thanks again!
Rick

dogdoctor 05-06-07, 09:25 PM I just want to mention that I saw a stack of Logitech® diNovo™ Media Desktop™ Laser (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2158,CONTENTID=10777)'s listed at 129.99 in a Sacramento Costco store today. Figured I would share the info for any interested parties.
Mikazaru 05-06-07, 09:56 PM I also have the Dinovo Edge and absolutely love it (very high quality and stylish). Also, Microsoft has a couple of cool looking bluetooth keyboard/mouse combos:
www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=080
www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=081
(first one isn't available until Sept. but is rechargeable like the Edge)
ValkyrieStation 05-07-07, 12:50 AM Rick,
There are different flavors of linux you can install on your PS3. I am personally using Yellow Dog Linux. I've heard other versions of linux might be more user friendly for newcomers, but I personally don't think YDL is all that intimidating so I just chose it.
For guides, I used a couple of guides while installing YDL. The official guide at terrasoft...
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/installation/
(Click on ydl5.0.1_ps3_guide.pdf under "Guides to Installation.")
...is pretty good but can be a little confusing because it's rather formal. I also used a couple of guides I found on forums, that spoke in more easy to understand terms (just do a google search and you'll find a couple, there's a lot of guides out there). Here's one of the ones I used:
http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=60162 (This one gives you a lot of links to the files you'll need.)
Basically you'll need to do the following to get YDL on your PS3:
1. Partition the hard drive right now and reserve 10gb for the ps3 and the rest of your space to the other operating system (linux) or vice versa. This will delete all your data on your PS3 right now so make a backup of files you want to keep or they'll be gone forever. You just need to do this one time.
2. Download the yellow dog iso (3.3 GB) from one of the public mirrors that terrasoft l lists and burn it on a dvd (I used a DVD-R, and at 4x speed it took about 10 mins)
3. Download the two files necessary for installation: otheros.self, otheros.bld and transfer them to to the PS3 (I used a memory stick for this one)
4. Put the dvd with your linux burned on it in your PS3 and go into the other os from the system menu in the XMB. It should reboot and start the install automatically. Takes about an hour to finish.
After you get YDL 5.0 running on your PS3 box, you may want to begin the process of updating to the recently released kernel (May 1 2007), which adds wifi support (so you can go online wirelessly on yellow dogl inux!). Check out the thread here for details on that:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=842174
tomei was gracious enough to upload a copy of the new kernel for us to download and you can find it in that link.
Good luck and enjoy your new diNovo Edge. I will most certainly update my thread here if I ever find out the solution to the touchpad in linux...

rettenhu 05-07-07, 07:27 AM Thanks for all the detail you provided regarding Linux! I will do my homework and probably give this a try relatively soon as I don't have much of anything on my new PS3 to worry about. The links and guidance you provided will help jump-start the process for sure!
This forum continues to be an outstanding source of info for me and I'd like to thank everybody for their assistance to my original question. I will post feedback here on my diNovo but I suspect the only issue will be keeping that nice finish fingerprint free!
Rick

rettenhu 05-07-07, 07:29 AM Sweet price... Was in my local Costco on Sunday but did not see any. Not unusual, as all Costcos are not created equal...

I thought is seemed a little pricey for a keyboard and mouse but then I saw BT and then I checked the logitech online price and was shocked.
Here is my question to all of you that have and use the keyboards. What do you use them for? I never use the web browser - my laptop is for that. Don't play CD's or import MP3's. I only download trailers - I don't try to create any movies. Really all I use the PS3 for is watch BR and games, in which I use the BT headset to communicate anyhow. Currently I only see me using the keyboard to text messages, but I can't justify blowing greater than 100$ to do so. Are you guys really using the keyboard so often? I'm just wondering where. Maybe I'm not getting the full potential out of my PS3.

I "only" paid $100 for the MX5000. I do use the web browser. Sometimes I even post here from the PS3. I have to compete for computer time with my wife and daughter so sometimes the PS3 is a nice alternative.
rettenhu 05-07-07, 02:12 PM I don't have a laptop or HTPC and like brakel, I have to share the home PC with other family members. So I see using the keyboard and PS3 browser, and as I mentioned in a prior post, I may also be installing Linux.

rettenhu 05-10-07, 10:50 AM Well, this "black beauty" arrived yesterday and I simply love it! It is amazingly thin and the piano black finish matches my Samsung TV and PS3 perfectly. Bluetooth synched right up with the PS3 and works nicelly with it. Just wish the PS3 browser was IE or Mozilla and that function keys could be mapped to the PS3 UI.
The keyboard looks great in the recharging stand and I am starting to get used to the touchpad mouse and the feel of the keys. I have zero regrets so far and highly recommend it to others if the higher cost is not an issue for you. Thanks again to all who helped make this decision!
Rick
ValkyrieStation 05-11-07, 01:27 AM If you got the Edge, I'm glad you're enjoying the keyboard. It is a great keyboard indeed... They have good deals on it (I'm not being vague on accident -- unfortunately I can't get specific due to forum rules here) last I checked so if anyone else is interested in it now would be a good itme to pick one up. Great overall keyboard for use with a media center PC or PS3. Of course, a keyboard is a keyboard is a keyboard...any decent one will suffice for most people, just so long as it gets the job done... =)
