View Full Version : Gladiator?
fragglerock585 05-04-07, 02:07 PM I dont know if this has been discussed yet, but im curious...
The Gladiator BD is listed on amazon. Isnt that a Universal title, or is it being distributed or something by another company.
Dont take this to be one of those "another nail in the coffin" bs posts, im just confused.
Jiffylush 05-04-07, 02:28 PM Dreamworks right?
I think this will come out on both, not even close to positive about that.
Whatever it is... it's a must have.
The PQ on that one should be amazing. One of my alltime favorite movies to boot.
delrmx01 05-04-07, 02:33 PM ^Dreamworks and Universal, here's a link from the HD DVD side-- Universal France is planning on releasing it sometime in 2007.

I believe Dreamworks controls this one in the U.S. so probably both formats.
Lets just hope we get PCM or DD THD on the BD version.
This title is a definite purchase in HD!
Dan Hitchman 05-04-07, 06:54 PM 24 bit lossless in at least 6.1 discrete. They remixed this one to 6.1 and encoded it as DTS-ES when it first was released on DVD and it sounds quite good.

darkjedi664 05-04-07, 06:58 PM This movie is GORGEOUS in HD :D Can't wait for BD and lossless sound :D
thewretched22 05-04-07, 08:54 PM It's distributed by Dreamworks through Paramount. So unless they get their head in the game don't expect lossless audio.
It will be a crime if this does not have lossless audio!

No, never. ;)
Jiggawhat (who works at Paramount) has mentioned that we should see this in the fall. So, it may be on the way. He mentioned Saving Private Ryan another time and then it was taken off the schedule, so things could change. As with any other title, I'm not getting my hopes up until it's actually announced, no, actually released.
Whenever it does come, I strongly hope we get the original cut and not just the extended version that came out in 2005. Ridley Scott insists that the original cut IS the director's cut anyway. Both cuts would be best for satisfying everyone, of course. Here's hoping they can do branching.
invadergir 05-06-07, 01:00 AM I believe Universal has the N. American rights to the film (much like Seabiscuit) So i wouldn't be expecting a Blu-ray release anytime soon but a possible HD-DVD release.

Paramount owns the rights, not Universal. Paramount aquired Dreamworks back in 2005 for $1.6 billion. The deal included all of their live action films (59 of them, including Gladiator), but not any Dreamworks Animation films.

Nope. Universal went cheap at the last minute and blew the deal. Paramount stepped up and got it.

"In the end, the sealing of the DreamWorks deal came down to speed - and to Grey's driving ambition to transform the lackluster track record of Paramount, the studio he took over just a year ago. In doing so, he took advantage of Geffen's annoyance with General Electric, the parent company of NBC Universal, which had lowered its initial bid for DreamWorks and then taken weeks to finish negotiating points that both sides described as minor details.
"Dealing with GE is unpleasant and difficult under any circumstances," Geffen said Saturday in an interview. "I think they thought we had no choice, and were going to squeeze us and squeeze us. After a year of dealing with them, they still did not have a concluded, finished contract ready to sign."
UxiSXRD 05-06-07, 05:00 AM It would be a GREAT with 24 bit PCM!
Dave Mack 05-06-07, 05:47 AM hell yes.
The 6.1 DTS which is on the original release (and shamefully dropped from the EE) was phenomenal.
"DIAMOND!!!!! DIAMOND!!!!!"
