After doing alot of research I decided to buy a Oppo 981HD based on the outstanding information I found here at this site. I had come to believe that this was the single best 1080P standard DVD player for under $1000. This took place about 6 weeks ago and I pulled the trigger and picked up the player from Amazon.

Well after that the Elite was announced and having a vpl-vw50 that only excepts 1080P via HDMI I had to get one.... and picked up a HD DVD add on to check out.. and after seeing that no way it is going back...

Last night messing around with the audio checking for 7.1 sound via HDMI with the xbox 360, I threw Star Wars III in to use the THX utilities....

At one point I was switching back and forth from sources to check to make sure that it wasn't a reciever setting stopping the HDMI from producing 7.1 and the first time I saw the picture back to back I was shocked

The 360 killed the Oppo on upconverting/scaling what ever you call it.

Remeber this is from a person that didn't even waste time putting a DVD in the 360 with the Oppo sitting next to it... The lines in the menu screen where much less jagged with the 360. The word Play had about half the jaggy lines when using the 360 Elite.

I will try and get pictures to compare this weekend....

Is this the appearance of a menu you are talking about? A note on taking pictures: much of the Oppo's video processing is disabled when you hit pause; the moving image is higher quality.

I don't know what you might think you see, but I see the same ugly and very obvious de-interlacing artifacts (jaggies) as the people at ExtremeTech did when they benchmarked XBox360's DVD playback in their article called "XBox360's Seriously Flawed DVD Playback" (do a Google search for it, I'm not allowed to post links for some stupid reason) when I have tested my own XBox360 with my own HQV benchmark DVD.
Of course my XBox360 is connected to my display through VGA cable but it really doesn't matter at all since both regular version and "ELITE" version of XBox360 have the same de-interlacing software (why wouldn't they?) and the type of video output have nothing to do with de-interlacing errors :p
