View Full Version : PS3 Resolution Questions?

Now that VF5 is coming out for the Xbox360, it's pushed off my purchase of the PS3 a little farther. Plus, I still need to finish Zelda: TP for the Wii. :)

I have a quick question on the resolution settings for the PS3. I'm familiar with the scaling issues, but how exactly does the PS3 handle resolution heirarchy? For example, I have a 720p set and would like to keep the PS3 at 720p, but it doesn't output BD at 720p.

What happens if I enable both 720p and 1080i for games that support both like VF5? Will the PS3 send out a 1080i signal for VF5 instead of 720p? Would I have to go into the settings each time to set the output?

The PS3 will try to run games at their highest native resolution first. So for upscaled games like VF5 if you have both 720p and 1080i enabled it will play at 720p.

960x1080 is higher resolution than 1280x720, but games like VF5 use 720p when available because the is what the developers preferred where as 960x1080 is just a fallback for displays without 720p support.

So is the heirachy determined by the game or the PS3?

From what I can tell its by the game preference first then the ps3 preference.

My ps3's xmb is at 1080i and the first time I put in a game it switched to 720p (motorstorm for what its worth), however the first time I started th GTHD demo it kept the res at 1080i until I switched it in the game's preferences.

It seems like most games know to display at 720p except for a few (only GTHD so far I think) and they have the option to switch it to the ps3 preference. Im actually suprised at how the ps3 manages different res for different applications, seems pretty effecient so far.
