I am thinking of trying to clean the dust from inside my RUBY projector. Is this ok to do or am I taking a chance of damaging something? It started making a really high frequency but dull sound a while ago and it seems to be getting worse. It comes and goes but sounds like an alarm clock is going off in the bed room at the other end of the house. The volume level of the noise is not the problem but the pitch is so high that its very distracting. Im hopping that cleaning the fans might fix the problem but will probably end up sending it in.

More than likely a bearing on one of the fans is going bad. If that's the case cleaning it won't help. Time to send it in (I assume by your question that you would not be comfortable disassembling your Ruby and replacing the offending fan yourself).

I cleaned the fans really well and got the crease between the motor and blades pretty good with damp q-tips. It has two what appear to be high quality fans that are impossible to remove with out taking it completely apart. Wow this thing is built like a tank with tons of thick aluminum for a chassis and not much plastic. Well the good news is so far it has been dead quite after cleaning it. I also went back to running it in norm alt. It was making the high pitch sound in both modes before but just finished watching LXG and AVP all the way through and the only distracting noise was from fans on PS3, but thats another story all together.
Just be careful, and if there is any "do not remove this seal or void the warranty" stickers, use a hair dryer!
