You need to adjust your expectations about how quickly people will reply to your postings here.

There is no simple yes or no answer to your question. Most players that scale to 1080p will also scale to 720p which might be the better choice for a 720 display, but you should try each output alternative to see which you like the best.

For a fair test use a calibration disc on each input setting.

I do not believe that any 720p display will accept a 1080p input (or at least the vast majority of them), so the 1080p capability of the upscaling player would not be utilized. There should be no difference between using a 1080p upscaling player to only output 720p and a 720p/1080i upscaling player without 1080p capability. Every upscaling player allows 720p and 1080i output, whether it can also output 1080p or not, and you should be outputing 720p to your 720p display.

The Sanyo Z5 will allow the 1080P signal to be fed into it but it will automatically scale it down to its native 720P.

The only real advantage to purchasing an upconverting DVD player like the Oppo 981 or the XA2 to be used on a 720P display in IMO is if in the near future your plans are to upgrade the display to 1080P.

I would think you would get better PQ if you set the upconverter to 720p output into the 720p display since it would be one less scaling factor taking place.
