I'm looking for a SD DVD player unconvertible to 720p around 100$.

I would like to have a decent player with good processors and I've read good comments on the Sony DVPNS75H.

I know Oppo is superior to this "low-cost" sony player, but I'm not sure I'm willing to spend 200$ on a dvd player (should I ? )

Is there something new coming soon I should wait for ?

I sure wouldn't say Oppo is "superior" to this player. This DVD player posses the Faroudja chip set which is a big bonus, only the 981 from Oppo has the Faroudja chip set. Not to compare they're the same, but they use the same chip set nonetheless.

You can order a refurbished unit from Sony directly for $60. I received mine Tuesday, and for $60, it CANNOT be beat.

Check out the link below for benchmark tests..

The Sony does not use Faroudja, I believe it is the same mediatek chipset that is in the Oppo 970. For under $100 you can buy several players with the same MTK chipset but also with PAL compatibility, DivX compatibility, and the ability to be made region-free, none of which the Sony has. - DR

I misread what one posted on the "official" Sony thread..

I would check out user comments, many who switched from the Oppo 970 to the Sony.

And search within that thread "Oppo 970" and you'll see what I'm talking about. You won't think twice about your purchase. It's a good one. :)

I have the Sony DVP-NS75H and get an outstanding picture with a Toshiba 62 inch DLP. Upconversion in excellent and this player will play any disk.

The Philips 5982 also uses Mediatek, has DivX Ultra certification, up to 1080p, region free hackable with remote codes, video adjustments (for brightness, contrast, color saturation, and sharpness), pillarboxing 4:3 and nonanamorphic tittles, and USB2.0 support for flash drives and USB hard drive support (for JPEG, MP3, DivX files). It's at BB locally for $65+tax right now. No HDMI cable included.

But how is the PQ compared to the Sony or Oppo? I've checked on AVS and found that some of said that the Sony has better PQ and not vice versa. For me, PQ is what really matters.

I can't find a review on the new Philips.

Sony only does 1080i but if you don't care then get a refurbed for $65 shipped (Sony 75H model) also from Sonystyle.com. I personally feel Mediatek players are very similar to each others on HDMI output (analog component is more dependent on build quality, etc.)

Then the Denon 2930CI or Toshiba XA2 is for you.

Agreed. Reon VX is the king if you can spend the money.

And I found a B-stock Denon 2930CI for $600 from a Authorized reseller on Denon's site.. the Denon has many other features the XA2 doesn't have, but I am still a SD-DVD purchaser.

The biggest:

XA2 has HD-DVD capabilities

Denon has noise reduction, DPIC (Denon Pixel image correction) and mosiquto, 3D and block adjustments.

I'm leaning towards the Denon, unless I the XA2 drops to low 500's (currently $580ish on Amazon)

It was as low as $519 last week so just be patient and get the XA2 brand new with 5 free HD-DVD discs which is worth easily $100.

It's now avail. at $529+$15 shipping ($10 discount if you use Google Checkout): http://www.compuplus.com/i-Toshiba-HD-XA2-HD-DVD-Player-1008526~.html?sid=0x4a24bduh96h6k (I've bought from them and they are good internet retailer).

I've bought from them before as well. I not going to be purchasing another DVD player for a few months anyways, so the XA2 should be under $500 by then. :)

On that webiste, a 4-year Mack warranty is $25. Is that warranty any good? is that 4 years on top of the OEM 1 year? Anyone had success in filing a Mack warranty claim?
