I have two of these systems in my house, one where the sensor to base station run is only about 6 feet and one where it's about 25. In both I've wired the sensor and base station using only 1 wire from each twisted pair in the Cat 5. Should I have used the complete pair for signal strength and preservation issues? The short run system works great, the long run one only sporadically.

For the long run try using 2 connectors for the singal and wire the rest as ground So that means use 6 wires as ground. It sometimes helps with long runs.
