I am very new to the world of HD and HD Televisions, so bear with me. I've attempted to research thoroughly on here as well as other internet sites, but only leave feeling very confused.

My question is this:

I am wanting to know what type of DVD player (short of being an HD player since I don't have the money) would make my standard DVD collection look their best. I currently am using the regular XBOX as my DVD player with the HD component cables. This looks nice, but I noticed in my picture info on the TV that it only outputs at 480i.

Do I need an upconverting DVD player of some sort to get the resolution to show in 720p or 1080i, or is this not possible? I also thought my TV would upconvert any signal it gets, but is this not true?

Thanks for any help.

Yes, your plasma will automatically upconvert all inputs to its native reoslution (768p), but upconverting players often do a better job than the display. I would recommend the Oppo 970 for you as a very reasonably priced, excellent upscaling player (it will be much better than your regular XBox).
