I want to be able to game in 5.1 surround sound but my audio receiver does not have an optical port. Is there anyway to have surround sound without the optical input?

Most likely, you'll need an optical input on your receiver for the surround sound to work. Is your receiver at least a 5.1 surround sound receiver?

Yeah it's a Sony Bravia Receiver (DAV-HDX265)
That's dumb. I'll never be able to watch Blu-ray or play my PS3 in 5.1 unless i get an optical receiver. I wish I would have known that beforehand.

Not true. Your receiver does have a digital coax connector so all you need is an optical to coaxial converter like THIS ONE (http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat_id=504&sku=40019). I'm sure there's cheaper ones out there that work the same...that's just the first one I found.

How would I work that? Put optical cord from my PS3 to that converter then a coaxial from that to my receiver? And would it be in 5.1 surround?

according to the specifications, yes, that should work.

I have used one several times and if it's the Radio Shack one, it worked just fine. Of course, it started shitting out on me after a while but that's Radio Shack for you.

Then I would suggest NOT buying the Radio Shack brand. :)

I just checked and I don't think my receiver even has a coaxial port! Jeez. I'm gunna return it to Best Buy. Hopefully they'll take it even though I threw out the box.

Ha. Radio Shack is a mixed bag. Their products work (if the fine print does't get ya) but there's always something tiny that makes them crap. Or they don't last very long.

Huh. The cnet review says there are coaxial and optical digital inputs..

Nothing on the front or back? I can't find a zoomed in picture on the web..

I can't remember where I saw that your receiver had a digital coax input and I can't find it again now. Looking again, it appears that you are correct. That's incredibly stupid. I didn't think anyone even made receivers of any kind without at least one digital input anymore.

Wow, I'm pissed. How can you release a new receiver without optical or coaxial digital? All that's in the back is HDMI, A/V inputs, component outputs, and the speaker jacks. Plus AM and FM things. That's it. Best Buy better accept my return cause this is dumb.

Well, I went to Best Buy yesterday and returned my reciever in DELL box. No problems. Even the customer service guy was puzzled why there wasn't an optical port. Then I got the LG 1000 Watt LHT764. One problem I'm having with it is that when I'm watching TV, sound is only coming out of the two front speakers and not the rear ones. I'm not sure if this is suppost to happen or it's on the wrong settings (it worked with the Sony receiver). Help?

That is bizarre that there were no optical inputs on the receiver.

As for audio coming out of the rear speakers, unless your watching a channel or DVD that provides 5.1 Dolby, then you won't hear anything. However, there are probably different surround modes you can choose to emulate surround sound from an analog feed. Try "Dolby Pro Logic II", "XPS Pro", or "VSM" as your surround mode.

Thanks alot. I realized after a few tries that PLII means Pro Logic. I put it on PLII MATRIX and now I can hear out of every speaker (plus the bass) while I'm watching TV. Thanks again. I can't wait till I get my 3 dollar optical cord and my second 3 dollar HDMI cord from Amazon.
