This week at the Square-Enix Party, Square will reveal their first RPG using the Unreal 3 Engine and word is it’s coming to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

Coming in Spring 2008, The Last Remnant is a single player RPG.

Synopsis:
One thousand years ago humanity came into contact with Remnants. These magical fragments of a bygone era were once used to promote peace across the world. Soon, as the rift grew between those who ruled and those who obeyed, the remnants ceased being instruments of balance, and instead became paths to immeasurable power. Where once there had been peace, only bloodshed remained.

Facts:

- Released simultaneously in the U.S. and Japan

-Two prominent characters each created to appeal to a specific territory. Rush Sykes will appeal to JP gamers, and “The Conqueror” for Western Audiences. Game won’t force you to choose which character you play.

- Remnants vary in size and can take the form of machines, beasts, and weapons.

- 4 races revealed: Mitra (humans), Yama (Large fish-like beings), Qsiti (small humanoid lizards), Sovanni (four armed cat like creatures)

- Battle System will not be passive and will include QTEs in certain instances. Fights still take place in a turn based frame work.

- This is the first UE3 game SE will be releasing. Graphics look great so no worries there.
Screens will be coming soon.

You've been throwing around invalid facts lately, Jetrii. The game is being developed for "next gen consoles", as in more than one, plural.

Square Enix knows role playing games. In the video game industry, rarely is a single company so closely tied to the identity of an entire genre. The company is responsible for two of the biggest RPG franchises in the world, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, and people have been playing these series since the 8-Bit era. RPG fans know Square Enix as the name to turn to for grand adventures, unforgettable characters, and jaw-dropping moments remembered for years. Recently, Square Enix has devoted considerable energy to iterating on its past successes, but that doesn't mean the company isn't moving forward. Next year gamers will be treated to "The Last Remnant", an all new title that incorporates all the rich locations and thrilling combat an RPG fan could hope for, along with a handful of unexpected details that will help define the direction of the genre this generation.

In addition to marking the beginning of a new franchise for SE, TLR represents a significant deviation from the way RPGs have traditionally been presented to a North American audience. Since most role playing titles are created by Japanese developers, they are released in Japan first, and then find their way to American gamers after a delay for localization (which took 7 months for FFXII for example). With TLR, this process will change; the game will be released simultaneously in the U.S. and Japan. "From the conceptual stage of this project, we kept a global market in mind, placing a special emphasis on the North American market" says director Hiroshi Takai.

One of the Results of this emphasis is the fact that the game has two prominent characters, each created to appeal to a specific territory. The Japanese audience is most likely to connect with Rush Sykes, an energetic and idealistic 18 year old swordsman. On the other hand, American gamers will probably be more drawn to the dark and mysterious figure only referred to as The Conqueror. Older and battle hardened, The Conqueror is unlike Rush in almost every way. Despite this clear distinction, TLR does not force players to choose one character or the other. While interesting in its attempt to reach out to American gamers with The Conqueror, the game will be exactly the same on both shores, with Rush set up as the primary protagonist."

SIDEBARS

IT TAKES ALL KINDS

The world of TLR is populated by several kinds of creatures each with distinctive visual characteristics and innate skills. These are the four main races players can expect to encounter both in exploration and combat

MITRA: Not to be confused with the cat-like Mithra race in Final Fantasy XI, Mitra are basically humans as we know them. They are the most numerous of all the races in the world.

YAMA: Large fish-like beings, Yama are incredibly powerful. Because of their strength, special weapons exist for Yama that cannot be wielded by other races.

QSITI: These small humanoids resemble lizards, and are particularly adept with magic. They are energetic and can be found all over towns.

SOVNNI: With four arms and cat-like features, the Sovanni are able to wield multiple weapons and excel in battle. they are also the rarest of the four races.

IT BEGINS

A few months ago, Square Enix announced that it had licensed Unreal Engine 3 for use in its upcoming titles. It is now clear that The Last Remnant will be the first game we see from the company to utilize this technology. Square Enix RPGs usually excel in the visual department anyway, but according to Takai, there are other benefits to using Unreal. "I think it shows in the screenshots we just released," he laughs. "The time between starting the development and seeing the graphic resource onscreen was so fast, we were able to delve in illustrating and experimenting at a very early stage".

ENJOY THE SHOW

For a title focused on story and epic battles, it should be no surprise that SE is intent on portraying TLRs events in as cinematic as way as possible. Taking charge on this front is real-time movie director Kouzi Kobayashi, the man responsible for the opening, ending, and event movies of Final Fantasy VII and VIII. This experience along with Kobayashi's work on Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and Final Flight of the Osiris (from the Animatrix) ensures that these sequences will be memorable.

I don't think this game is confirmed to be released on any platforms, consoles or handhelds. We'll have to wait until the square party to know exactly what games are supposed to hit what platforms.

Although the fact that it's using the UT3 engine gives weight to the theory it'll be on the 360 and ps3, and not the wii (next gen consoles).

From Game Informer:

I simply copied and pasted it from Deeko as that was the only place that had the story at the time (from what I saw.) Besides, I never said it was a 360 exclusive. Seeing as how they are using the Unreal 3 engine, why would they make it exclusively for the Xbox 360?

And where does it say a 360 version is mentioned? Nowhere. The article says NEXT GENERATION CONSOLES, and where did you did get this information from?

To be fair, they also list the Playstation 3 as a tag in the article. No one said it was an xbox 360 exclusive, you just assumed. Although I admit, they excluded the Playstation 3 from the article, just like I did seeing as how this is an Xbox forum.

I have zero interest in traditional JRPG's. Turn based combat is probably 50% of the reason why.

Okay, captain nemo. Whatever floats your boat. All you're doing is giving out misinformation to people who're reading this thread. When they read your thread and see it's implying that it's being made for 360, they're going to think that the game isn't being made for the PS3 and only for 360. At least you should've added that it's for next generation consoles.

You also made a mistake in your Splinter Cell thread saying that the game is utilizing SM3 when in fact, the Finnish article never mentioned anything like that except for the game using a heavily modified UE2. The Finnish magazine was translated from a member who had the magazine from Gaming Age Forum, and websites started to added their own fud.

Again, I'm going to leave the first part to confusion. I simply copied the article and posted it on the Xbox forums. It was only a matter of time until someone posted the news on the Playstation forum.

As for Splinter Cell, the article does indeed say that a PS3 version would require radical lightning changes. Seeing as both GPUs support SM3, the folks at Beyond3D deducted that this is due to the fact that the Xbox 360's SM features instructions not seen in SM3. Since the Playstation 3 does not have these instructions, it is not possible to simply port the lighting system, it would have to be remade using SM3. The "impossible" refers to the fact that these instructions can't be used on the PS3.

Haven't been able to confirm it from another source yet but according to this link the Demo may be out today (I wish it to be true so I type it here while clicking my heals "theres no place like RPG land, theres no place like RPG land). I was wondering where this game went and am looking forward to finally getting a look at it.

EDIT: I need to read the actual actual article not the poorly translated one on N4G.
"A trailer for the game has also been shown, which will apparently appear on XBLM today. It’s unclear whether or not this is going to be worldwide or just in Japan."

Oh well, it will still give me a "look" assuming its released in US as well as Japan. Still encouraging news that the game is getting closer to completion.

EDIT2:
Now, Tales of Vesperia will actually have a demo this month (apparently) : http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/06/10/tales-of-vesperia-demo-promised-for-july/

AND

Infinite Undiscovery has been dated : http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/06/10/infinite-undiscovery-confirmed-for-worldwide-september-release/

North America on September 2
Europe on September 5
Japan September 11

Well then you may enjoy Infinite Undiscovery and Tales of Vesperia, since both feature real-time combat. I personally actually like being able to control all members of my party, which is usually only really possible with a turn-based system. In titles with real-time combat, you usually get stuck controlling the main character while your CPU-controlled allies are getting pounded and generally screwing things up. I had to quit one of the Star Ocean games on PS2 for this very reason, because I couldn't get my allies to behave and they kept getting slaughtered.

I know this is an old thread but I was looking for somewhere to simply put how much I am enjoying the game. The depth of everything is insane. It appears that if you want something rpg-wise it has it. Plot twists it is there, Customizing equipment from collected components there, weapons found in treasure chests there, active battle system (think lost odyssey) there, Multiple people to choose from to play is there each somewhat unique it seems, long developing story is there, only half the world in the storyline rest for free exploration there, same areas changing through story events and opening different areas also is there.

At first it started a little slow but once you got going I could not stop it seems. I at the start of disk two and about 30 hours in. I spent 2 days (about 8-10 hours) just exploring areas that are not part of the story it seems. I forgot where I needed to go for the story I was gone so long and had to look it up.

So I wanted to post something. This is coming from someone who played the original zork back in the day and stayed up all weekend (36ish straight hours) playing FF1 when I was a kid at my cousins. So I would say I am pretty old school leaning in my prgs.

I have been having a blast playing this, like you said, lots of customization, rare monster, lot of recruitable characters and a LOTS of sidequest. This game if fun if you can get pass the graphic glitch. Same thing with Infinite Undiscovery, both game game terrible critics, but i have been having so much fun with both. Currently on my 3rd game on IU. I just can't get pass the first 2 guards at the beginning:mad:

I have no idea why but I have not noticed the graphic issues. But then again I haven't read about them on purpose so I am not looking for them. There are a few I guess when using special powers but that is about all I notice. I totally forgot to mention the rare monsters. I say 2 or 3 at the beginning but have not seen any in the last 20 hours or so playing. Wait I saw one in the vale or whatever it is called but that is it. It seems though that is you open the other guilds the monster hunting becomes like in that one final fantasy game not to long ago. Very cool by my reasoning.

For the record I did pause my play though of IU to play this game but you give me good hopes once I get back to it after tales which also sneaked in there.

I too have been having a wonderful time with this game. It is surprisingly addictive for some reason. True, there is some frame rate and loading issues but the game is still fantastic. It is a fresh twist to traditional turn based RPGs.

I have to tell someone but after 3 days (about 12 hours) I finally got blackout to go off. I am still in shock though it happened last night. I was so excited I tried to tell my wife but her look basically said "why the hell are you still playing that game" before I got the words out let along explain it.

I know for sure though this one will have to be a two time play through which for me has only happened once before (final fantasy 1) as I keep finding out all the things I missed. Next time though I think I will go two hand weapons instead of duel yield which will be an interesting change.

So I've gotten kind of addicted to this game... It's a lot of fun.

I do have a question though. When I go to my map and one of the characters (David, Emma, etc.) ask me to go kill monsters or look for a item I always click "yes" however nothing happens. Do I have to meet them somewhere to go out and look for stuff? How does that work?

Thanks a lot!

What I have found it means is that they are looking for something in particular when asking. Normally they ask for things out of the possible range I have found but it is a good idea to keep an eye out for them. I have found they are likely the materials you will find in the near future though. These items normally then go to upgrade the weapons. This is why they are asking for items is to upgrade weapons.

As for fighting I have not found a purpose for that at all to be honest. maybe just to tell you you are not leveling enough. It appears I am about through the first play through but actually playing another already.

I finally finished this game tonight (just in time for Star Ocean too :P). I think it's a pretty good game, I found the battle system to be very interesting, especially during the hard boss battles where you need a lot of strategy (and a bit of luck sometimes) to succeed. I was definitely addicted for a while but I'm glad I finished it so I can move on to something new hehe.

The graphic issues really didn't take anything away from the game for me, it's not the type of game where it's going to detract from the game play at all.

Overall I'd put it behind Lost Odyssey and Tales Of Vesperia in terms of my favorite JRPGs this gen although from what I'm reading I think Star Ocean IV will bump it down to 4th.
