I was under the impression that you could connect the 360 controller to the PC via the USB adapter. However, my computer does not recognize the controller. I've downloaded drivers and everything, but I just can't get this to work.

You can't hook up a wireless controller that way; the "play and charge" cable only charges the battery, nothing more. The only way to play wired is to use a real wired controller.
You *can*, however, use a wireless controller with a wireless USB device that recently came out for $20.
If you are talking about the gaming adapter, which is the usb device. First you have to turn the controller on by pressing the big green X. Then press the button on the usb receiver until the light blinks and then the small button on the front of the controller and they will sync up just like they do on the xbox 360. Then it should show up in control panel as a joystick. I believe that is how it works.

sadly my computer isn't that far from my 360 so everytime I sync my controller with my pc I end up turning my 360 on.

Unplug your 360, then do it.

Can you use it like a mouse? like not for gaming but as a replacement for a really crappy mouse you've had since 1995? :p
