Are there two different types of Region 2 DVDs and player for PAL and NTSC, and will the movies work on both or only one?

I ask this because I imported a Japanese PS3 and I would like to play Region 2 (European, mostly for the UK) DVDs, but witht he PAL/NTSC difference mean that I can't, even if I have an HDTV?

I don't know about the PS3.

There are DVD players that are both multi-region and multi-system (NTSC and PAL) and which will also convert PAL to NTSC and NTSC to PAL. All the Oppos do this.

No, none of the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray players are multi-system or region-free.

This really bugs me. I am still looking over/deciding on a region free SD DVD deck for playing discs of R2 and for PAL->NTSC conversion of them and nothing more. If these HD DVD/Blu-Ray decks played these, I wouldn't bother. Especially when decks like the A2/XA2 are said to be better than pretty much any standard DVD player. :(

Anyone know how much does the HD-DVD drive for the 360 costs in Europe (in USD)? If I got that would I be able to watch R2-PAL DVDs on my Xbox through that drive?
