If you buy one don't buy it from "Meritline". They advertised that they had a blu-ray/HD-DVD drive then shipped a Blu-ray drive only. Now they won't give their customers an rma or return the item. This their orginal site via google cache can be pulled up by doing a search of "meritline GGW-H10NI"

Does this combo drive have limitations like the combo player itself such as it can not read iHD or recordable media?

Would it be better and around the same price to just purchase two individual drives for each format for the PC and if so which ones are recommended? I believe Pioneer has one out for around $300 now

So how does one use this drive to watch both formats? Does it come with a special software?
PowerDVD for example wants me to choose one of the two formats while installing and won´t play the other one unless i re-install it.

I heard either power dvd (newer version) or windvd will present the option upon disc insertion.

PowerDVD Ultra 7.3 will play both BD and HD DVD.
