I just bought a Samsung HL-S56787W.--thanks to the info on this forum--I love it.

I have a Sony 5 disc Progressive scan DVD player (Sony DVP-NC665P) DVD's look great over component. I then bought the new upconverting Samsung DVD-VR357 which has HDMI but not progrssive scan. DVD's look a little better and cleaner (than the Sony DVP-NC665P) over my HDMI cable from Monoprice--but not a huge difference--but the Samsung does not have progressive scan.

I was wondering if progressive scan is only a componenet video feature, and if it is moot over HDMI. I ask because I have my eye on the Sony DVP-NC85H which has HDMI unpconvert and progressive scan--and I am wondering if the HDMI unpconversion will be any better on this model because it also has progressive scan--or if progressive scan is moot over HDMI.

wow--amazing (and a bit confusing) but I get the gist--thank you. I guess I'll stick with my setup until I'm ready for BD or HD-DVD.

--just one question: are the scalers in TV's as good as the scalers in the DVD player itself? My Samsung HL-S5687W upscales everything to 1080i--is that as good as an upconverting DVD player that scales up to 1080i?

I think it totally depends on the individual models of both.
