Hey guys,

I been catching up on some anime that are fansubbed. I currently just copy the avis to cd/dvd and play them through the OPPO. The only problem is the oppo cuts off about an inch on the top and bottom. This is using OPPO in widescreen mode with no zoom. To work around this I turn the OPPO to standard (this is on a samsung 32 lcd), and zoom out to 1/2. The picture looks good and i can see everything, but there is a lot of unused space. I am not sure if there is a workaround or if I am doing something wrong. Since the show is not broadcasted in HD, they were encoded with 640x480 resolution from the RAWs.

Thanks,
Rich

if i'm thinking of what you're talking about...

the issue really lies with how the subtitles were hardcoded into the video. not a big fan of anime, but i've seen a few clips of how they're encoded.

correct me if i'm wrong, but the subtitles are pushed down as far as possible; i guess the main reasoning behind this is so the viewer gets to see more of the picture/action as much as possible without being blocked by the subtitles.

unfortunately, the coders, when making these encodes, only keep in mind that the viewer's primary display is the computer screen, and not necessarily the tv via a divx dvd player. you'll probably already know this, but those subtitles are cropped off on the tv due to overscanning.

some media players have a zoom out function to compensate for this. unfortunately, as you've seen, the oppo zooms out too much. you might have to try your luck with another alternative.

Ensure that you are using the display's native resolution. You will also want to ensure that yo are not using any Zoom or Aspect Ratio controls on your display as they can effect the amount of overscan and pixel cropping.

The DV-970HD, OPDV971H, and the DV-981HD should not have any pixel cropping or overscan. This means that the DVD player itself should not be cutting off any of the raw visual information which is stored on the disc. If the boarders are being cropped, then it is likely the display.

i have looked at all my settings and its def the oppo player, dvds play fine but its something with the 640x480 divx videos. My tv is a 32 samsung 32, oppo connected through hdmi on 720p, tv is set to 16:9 (tv does not have any zoom functionality in 720p), oppo is set to widescreen. I have tried changing all the settings to come up with the best option and so far the best solution has been

OPPO to 420p in standard tv mode in 1/2 zoom and then 1x zoom with the tv provides a good picture, everything aligns and displays correctly
