View Full Version : Are you happy with your Epson 1080p?
Hi,
I am looking to upgrade. I'd rather not spend another $2k for the RS-1. For those of you who have purchased the Epson 1080p home or pro:
1. Are you happy with your purchase?
2. What is the projector's greatest strength?
3. What is the projector's biggest weakness?
4. Will it be a significant, noticable upgrade from an Infocus 7200 (DLP)?
Thanks and I eagerly await your responses.
Moderator: Please delete the duplicate post in the over 3k section. This rightly belongs here. Thanks
Apparently not.
ChrisW6ATV 05-10-07, 03:37 AM Answers to the numbered questions:
1. Yes!
2. 1080p, it is that simple.
3. I honestly cannot find any obvious ones, performance-wise, so I will just say $3000 is a big jump from many current good-performing 720p projectors.
4. Unless the 7200 is significantly better than a Benq PE7700/Toshiba TDP-MT700 in some way, then it will indeed be a big improvement if you are sitting close enough to your screen to currently see the limitations of a 720p display. If your current screen size is limited by the picture available from the InFocus and you would like a bigger one, then the Epson could be a big jump, because its wide zoom range may be better than the 7200's.
mpenton 05-10-07, 08:23 AM 1. Yes
2. 1080p and ease of setup
3. I haven't seen any beyond what you get when going from a DLP to an LCD. Black level is better than I expected but it was he tradeoff I made in going to 1080p at a more or less reasonable price.
4. I went from an Optima H78DC3 to the Epson and haven't been disappointed. I gained brightness, saturation, resolution and ease of placement with only a small loss of black level. I've watched it about 3 hrs a day since I got it and have really enjoyed watching HD material again (HD DVD & recorded OTA).
Thanks. I assume that black level would be better than my Infocus 7200 anyway, right?
One thing that concerns me is comments that it is not very "sharp". Thoughts?
kaotikr1 05-10-07, 12:14 PM 1. Yes, I am very happy.
2. 1080p at less than $3k
3. I would say price since a good 720p is sub $1k.
4. I went from the HD1000u and I would do it again. I love the Epson.
Part of me likes knowing that I have 1080p, I also love the fact that the Epson looks incredible.
Jones_Rush 05-10-07, 04:17 PM To break the chain of good comments, Jacksonian (a member of this forum who was the first to order the Epson 1080p) said that he is not content with this projector (though at first he was). He claims that the dynamic iris make more noise than he can live with. Last time I read he wants to sell it for this reason, and buy a better projector, maybe the JVC (which makes a lot of fan noise, so he could find himself back at where he started).
Thanks. Keep the feedback coming.
DReborn 05-10-07, 05:32 PM just curious, how big a picture can this baby throw? i know it can do 100" at 9.5ft but what's the max? maybe a better thing to ask is, what size are people using this projector at?
mpenton 05-11-07, 07:35 AM With the projector sitting about 1 ft back and 3 ft over my head I can barely hear the fan, let alone the iris. It all depends on the person, spending quality time with jets, rockets and gas turbines seems to have taken it's toll.
In terms of sharpness I don't how much sharper it needs to be. From 12ft away I can read the text on computer desktop at 1920x1080p thrown on a 100" screen. I cannot say that every Epson will be that sharp since I'm lucky the panels in mine weren't misaligned due to the obvious mistreatment given to the box by the carrier.
According to the calculator on Projectorcentral it will throw a 142" from a distance of 14'. I'm using a Carada 100" in Brilliant White but will probably change to Cinema White when I remodel the HT.

lol man, don't you suffer from tinnitis ?
mpenton 05-12-07, 11:33 AM Suffer is a small matter of opinion, just think of the projectors I can enjoy that drive others bonkers...
You think jets and rockets are bad for hearing, try spending your day with hundreds of 15-16 year-olds. How about eight or nine 15 year old girls screaming in a cinderblock hallway five feet away from you? That'll both wreck your hearing and split your skull at the same time. :D

Mine looks quite sharp. I can see all of the details on a Windows 1080p desktop just fine, for example. I have seen one other 1080p projector output (the Mitsubishi 5000), and it is similar as far as I can tell.

I do not use the dynamic iris on my Epson because it was "a new noise" to me (I switched from a DLP), and I am very happy with the black level without the auto-iris.
tlreddragon 05-14-07, 01:42 AM The auto-iris definitely does a good job in boosting contrast. Although I find the brightness fluctuations a little distracting at times, it's a small price to pay. I also don't hear any noise while the iris is opening and closing and I sit pretty close to the projector so that's not a problem.

I just received my 1080 yesterday and I am very impressed. It just blows the doors off the AE900U I used to own. Funny thing about the auto-iris. When I set up the projector and started going through various BDs, HD DVDs and DVDs I was amazed at how bright the image was and how great the contrast and color and apparent black level was. One test for me is how the projected black borders that surround a 2.35:1 or 4:3 video look (on my 16:9 screen). I know blacks are pretty good, if they melt into the black of the film rather than have a distracting slightly lighter grayish cast. The HC1080 had the blackest of black border (out of the box). Okay, so I want to see how this puppy looks without the iris on. Well, it turns out that the darn thing came (by default) without the auto-iris on. So, even with it off the picture on this thing is incredible. Needless to say I will probably leave the iris off.
Another thing is that in low lamp mode the projector is very quite and even in high lamp mode the noise level is pleasant, not high pitched. Also, this projector is very attractive (at least to my eyes) and the lens is a high quality design allowing accurate slow ramp focusing.
The issue of SDE on this projector is almost a joke. With that many extremely tiny pixels on the screen you can't see them unless you go right up to our screen (so, I don't miss my Panny's "smooth-screen" at all!) However, that said, we sit about 9' from a 92" dia. Dalite 1.1 HC Matte White screen. Those with larger screens and shorter viewing distances might (just might) be in a different boat.
All I can say at this point is this projector delivers and we love it so far... :)
