View Full Version : Unusualy behaviour of DVD player

Last week we took delivery of a Sharp Aquos 42" LCD screen. It's the 1080P version if that matters. DVD player (JVC HR-XVC27U) and LCD are connected by component cables.

A couple nights ago I was trying to run the THX Optimizer to set the contrast and other picture levels.

When I went to "play" the first test (the first one being a big square white box), I noticed I couldn't make the test image appear correctly. The idea is to set the white/brightness level to max and still be able to differentiate between 4 slightly different white boxes within the large box. I couldn't see anything but a big white box.

Last night I was messing with it again, but flipped back over to watch tv for a bit off the satellite, so just switched inputs.. Realizing at commercial (10 or 15 minutes later) I had left the test "running" I flipped back to my DVD player. Within seconds the proper test image was there. I made some adjustments and went on to the next test. (this next part took a bit of figuring out...and is the weird part). As soon as I either pressed a button on the DVD remote or actually pressed a button on the DVD player itself, the screen "changed" from displaying the "test image" to displaying a brighter square box..all the same whiteness....still the test image, but I could in no way make out the proper characteristics I had just seen moments before.

I know it's not possible, but the "appearance" of what happen was almost like you had hit a "reset" or "default" option and changed all the control values on the TV, yet I was looking at the menu and nothing changed.

Speculating... it's as if the DVD player went into some "low power" mode and reduced the output level of the component out, and then when a button was pressed, it "woke up" and reverted to a bright display again.

I've never seen anything like it before. Obviously I can't use this DVD player to make "adjustments" to my new LCD, whther it;s with the THX program or something else such as Digital Video Essentials or Avia.

So what I guess I'm asking is... what the heck could be going on with my DVD player to have it act that way?

Thanks
