View Full Version : COMMAND & CONQUER 3 Who's Playing?
I was wondering if anyone started playing this game yet. I played for awhile lastnight and can't help but feel like I am going down memory lane. Which is a good thing! Same cheesy cut scenes, same building features and same soldiers! Man, I love this game. The sound is pretty amazing to. When I give orders to units behind me you can hear them say, "YES SIR" in the back surrounds. Now that is a nice touch. Explosions also sound great! My neighbors must think I am at war!
Jeff Flowerday 05-10-07, 10:15 AM I picked it up and played a bit as well. Hopefully have more time for it this weekend.
TRALFAZ 05-10-07, 12:16 PM Love it !! The controls, graphics, gameplay and they even fixed all that stuttering that was so annoying in BFME II. With this and NBS Street Homecourt, EA is really looking up. I only wish EA would discover what "system link" is. It's really silly for my kid and I to have to play over LIVE from different rooms in the same house.

Still getting used to the controls but they'll come around. Graphics could be a little better IMO.
I picked this up for the PC - loving the old school video segments takes me back to the original C&C series days :).
I tried the demo on the 360 but decided I liked the controls and upgraded graphics on the PC a bit more.
Great game if you like RTS.
Cheers
Krevnik 05-10-07, 02:02 PM So far, tinkering with Skirmish, I think they did a much better job in balancing the two sides. The big problem I had with C&C2 was fences. Firestorm vs Missiles, Nod getting tanks to circumvent the fences entirely, and so on. It made game balance a bit wobbly at times, and forced a particular build style if you were GDI or Nod.
The best thing Nod got this time around: Stealth Tanks that don't suck. *g*
Ktulu_1 05-11-07, 02:40 PM This game was waiting for me on the front porch when I got home yesterday. C&C was an easy choice for me as I must have played at least three different versions of this game on the PC.
This version is just more of the same which is basically what I bought it for. As already stated, the controls are not as easy to use as a mouse and keyboard but I'm getting used to them.
newfmp3 05-11-07, 02:44 PM i got it for pc, that is where I'll be playing it. Controls better, looks a lot better too. nice to see this type of game work so well on a console though.
methos75 05-11-07, 02:47 PM Got it yesterday And I am loving it, I just re-took Langley AFB and will be taking Hampton Rd when I get home. Just wish you had a little more freedom in how to deal with battles, on the Langley mission I wanted to use ground forces to destroy the NOD base, but I kept getting decimated by those lazer turrents that just keep respawning making Air power the only real option, and I hate being forced into one road like that.
This game has made me want a remake of Dune 2000 on XBL though, I kill for that using redone graphics and C&C3's gameplay system.
HoodedSoldier 05-11-07, 02:50 PM Picked up yesterday as well. Loving it. First rts i'm gonna try to get into. Gonna play more this weekend on single player before i hop online.
gt: Mo Gunz
I've got it sitting here waiting to be played. I'd like to do some non-rushing multiplayer

The trick to dealing with Nod turrets is that you ignore them when attacking. You need to go straight for the core that connects each triplet together. It is possible to break through with ground troops and win, but you have to be careful, and rush quickly. Grenadiers in APCs tend to work best for this (since even the lasers take awhile to burn through a force of APCs).
I did use air support for this one, but only to take out the turrets guarding one entry... the APCs with Rockets/Grenades tooks out the rest of the turrets on their own.
methos75 05-11-07, 03:57 PM I'll try that when I get home, I still need the Ribbon anyway.

The APC + Grenadier combo is also helpful for clearing out the garrisons on this level... makes it easy to find/get all the sniper squads which can help you bring down artillery on the enemy base at the end.
cstmstyle 05-11-07, 05:04 PM I bought it yesterday to play but discovered my 360 broke after the spring update. So i'm without a console for the next month while they fix it. Was really hoping to have some fun with this game. Anyone know when the Elite gets restocked?
benjamin-benjami 05-11-07, 05:44 PM how is everyone doing with the controls. i bought it yesterday but haven't had a chance to play... i played the demo but had trouble getting groups set up, etc...

Go through Boot Camp, and it will explain how to use the D-pad to setup groups. I find that a lot more useful and faster than using the RT menu. Down turns your selected units into a single group, and up switches between groups.
I find that keeping proper groups, and not overdoing the number of groups you use helps a bit on the console. I normally ever wind up using 4-5 groups at most. (Bombers, Primary Attack Force, Secondary Attack Force, Support/Engineers, etc)
Quikzilver 05-11-07, 08:47 PM I picked it up for the 360 after a long debate. I got to play a little bit yesterday and I love it. Like most people with the 360 version have said, the controls are a little bit of a challenge to get used to but they definitely did a great job porting it to a controller.
I've never played a C&C game ever so the cut scenes with the actors are a real treat for me, especially since I love Michael Ironside as Sam Fisher and I also watch Lost.
My gamertag is "Osiriis" if anybody wants to play over XBL. I have a vision camera as well so you can see my ugly ass cry out in fear as your army decimates mine (I'm not very good at RTS games).
Been playing the demo and now the release exclusively since they came out. I am loving every moment, its really a great reminder of what made rts games so fun back when I was in high school. I got use to the controls after just a few games. I think I may actually be better with the controller than I am with the mouse/keyboard on my pc now. I played through the GDI missions on my pc, and now I only play on LIVE on my 360. It works great and its funny as hell seeing the person you're playing as you lay waste to their base. Only down side is that most people disconnect the moment they realize they're dead.
I played again tonight for a loooong time! Wow this game is a blast. Very addicting... I keep seeing little men running and yelling, yes sir! It is so much fun sending them on suicide missions...
Razorback HDTV 05-15-07, 10:41 PM How does this look in standard definition?
I think it looks fine in 480i. As good as it should...
thearod 05-16-07, 03:39 AM I'm a HUGE C&C fan and I must say the graphics on the 360 version don't even compare with that of the PC version. Granted I am running a C2E QX6700 w/ BFG 8800GTX on my pc but after seeing how well the 360 handles Gear of War there is no excuse for not having graphics on par with PC.. IMO
Other than that, game play is the same and controls are definitely nice on the 360.
Back to the graphics. I am experiencing A LOT of screen tearing (V-Sync issues) in this game. I mean seriously when the 1st Gen of games for the system came out that was kind-of acceptable... but yah, the system has been out for a year and a half now these small problems should have been ironed out by now.
To be frank, I don't even pay much attention to the graphics. I am to busy sending out units to die! :D
leftkidney 05-16-07, 08:48 AM is it just me but do these games just suck like golf and country music - just kidding
I downloaded the demo and I played it for like an hour and still I dont understand the reason for a game that controls this way why would someone want to play this kinda game it is kinda like a "point and click" game why?
mikepaul 05-16-07, 09:06 AM My first skirmish went badly. I looked over the whole map and didn't see my AI enemy.
So I just started building the stuff I'd done in Boot Camp, then out of nowhere some guys and a tank rolled in. Sent the few troops I had available to deal with them, then got preoccupied with watching the battle while MORE TANKS ROLLED IN. Again, no sign of their origin anywhere on the map.
So after the AIR STRIKE hit and wiped me out, I was left wondering how I'd build that much stuff that fast next time, and if I'd ever win against the AI...
maximuslcd 05-16-07, 11:26 AM I have the demo and have played it a few times, I like it but havent decided if I'm gonna pick up the full game yet

In skirmish and later missions, there is a 'fog of war' that prevents you from just seeing where the enemy is. You have to have a few units scout early and often so you can keep tabs on where the enemy is, and what they are doing.
To build quickly, I would say the key things to learn is the X button, or the tab groups for building units. This will let you assign attack commands, and tell your base to start churning out the second wave. Use queues to your advantage when building units. I almost always plan my attacks in groups, and will have barracks/hand-o-nod/etc producing the entire group in its queue, maybe two if I have the finances to spare.
Buildings are trickier... since the queue stops when the building is finished, the X button becomes VERY useful here. As is building a crane. Although I find that later on in a game, the crane becomes insurance against a strike against my MCV more than it is of real use.

I had heard some of the units may be too small, or that there may be some other problems due to the lower resolution?
I guess, but you know it plays so well that I don't mind... :)
rover2002 05-17-07, 12:02 PM This demo is great :) One question for those that have had it a while, how do i just group 4 orc's or just a group of mam tanks? If i pull the left trigger and press 'A' it groups everything!
Thanks for help :)

Right Bumper + A.
Selects all units of the same type as the unit you select that are on the screen. I use it often to group Orcas/Firehawks/Etc for bombing runs during an attack.

Mindwarper 05-17-07, 12:55 PM I got it for the pc and tried the 360 demo. I think the pc version is better for me. But if two of my friends get copies, I'll be playing it as well.
Razorback HDTV 05-19-07, 03:16 AM Bought a 360 and this game last night. (Having a tinge of remorse after seeing the Uncharted videos... oh well, I'll have halo 3)
I only have an SDTV, but the games looks very good. If you are relegated to an SDTV, don't let that deter you from purchasing this game.
That's what makes it so much fun! Those cheesy videos... :D
vanilla rice 05-19-07, 01:00 PM i got this a week ago and it's great. i'm not even a big RTS player, on platform OR pc, but this game is fun. i can't imagine playing this in standard def on a sub 40" tv, how could you make anything out??!? but on a big screen it's great. the only other RTS i've ever played was the Aliens vs. Predator RTS on xbox 1 - that was a really FUN game!!! :)
I played mine again lastnite!
