Hi,

I have decided it is time to buy my first tv. I am left choosing between the Samsung HL-S6186W and the JVC HD61FN97. I have exhausted my research and I realize it is time to spend time with both displays at the stores to choose which one I want.

Before I do this, I have a few questions. In others' opinions, is there a screen discernably better in the sub $2400 range keeping the screen at least 61" in size? I do not want an SXRD because I have a family member with one.

I have tried going to stores in the NH area but I get frustrated with the store setups and the knowledge of some sales people. I would like to know if a certain calibrated screen stands way above the Samsung or JVC for a few hundred more? I tried contacting some ISF calibrators for advice, I can never get one on the phone.

Last, I will need accessories. I am contemplating getting a PS3 or holding off for the Samsung dual player. I have never had a cable box or used anything other cables besides A/V and RCA. What do people suggest I buy to have everything read to go? HDMI for the JVC? DVI for the Samsung? Is there a best place to buy tv stands?

I have a DIY 6-channel preamplifier/amplifier (XLR inputs) and DIY speakers to use. I am going to try and make do without a receiver for the time being.

These are not really the same. The JVC accepts 1080p input and the Samsung does not.
The samsung is 1280 x 720 and the jvc is 1920 x 1080.

You do not need an hdmi cable unless you have something on the other end
of the cable to feed your tv with.

Thank you flatpanel,

I went to Tweeter and Best Buy today to inspect the tvs.

I ended up deciding on the JVC because Best Buy is offering a special discount plus a coupon for 10% off. I also get a free stand.

Let me ask this question. Best Buy has certified ISF calibrators, in peoples' experiences, do you think they are as capable as the ISF calibrators touring the east coast?

I never did fully understand what it meant when a screen accepted a 1080p input or not. Does that mean HD-DVD and Blu Ray discs will look better on the JVC because it can accept their true 1080p outputs?
