I just bought a used Toshiba XS35 on ebay. I paid $310.00 for it. I was wondering if that was a good price, considering the availability of DVD recorders since the FCC thing.

For comparison, the last XS35 I picked up in March from Best Buy was $297 after a 12% off coupon. (and then sales tax) nextoo 05-10-07, 12:34 PM Not bad. Good price. On another topic. The only thing I would caution with the XS35 on ebay are the "as is" auctions. Especially with the XS35 because it uses a proprietary DVD burner. It has not been confirmed if the proprietary DVD burner can be swapped with anything yet. And this type of burner swap would require additional parts from Toshiba - the IDE conversion circuit board and ribbon cable. The ribbon cable in the XS35 would be too short to use. If an "as is" XS35 comes with a remote it would be a better deal. If things don't work out you can recoup some $'s by selling the remote back on ebay. Also I've noticed these "as is" auctions seem to be loaded with bad parts. It's not just one thing wrong. It's like they take all the good parts and build a working machine. And the "as is" ones get loaded with numerous bad parts. But again, not a bad price for a working model. It should work fine. A lot of the ones sold on ebay are returns with nothing wrong with them. The original buyer found it too complex and returned it. It's like buying a tire with 10 miles on it. starrock77 05-10-07, 02:37 PM Not bad. Good price. On another topic. It is a working model that does have the remote. Any word on a working DVD burner replacement would be wonderful incase this one craps out. nextoo 05-10-07, 02:43 PM Thanks Nextoo. The ones sold by dealtree and 2ndturn-closeouts are the questionable ones. erf2u 05-11-07, 12:07 AM I suppose I should be lucky. I got my XS35 on ebay for $173. The seller forgot to put the remote in the shipment, so I could not test it right away. After a few days of sending him email, and no response, I decided to open a dispute with paypal. This froze his account, and I got a phone call the next morning. He had the remote and was going to send it immediately. Got the remote and everything started up as expected (it was stuck in the TV Guide setup and required the remote to get past this). The HDD worked and the DVD reads. I am hoping to write some DVD's in the next day or so, just to make sure it all works. The unit was in mint condition and not a scratch to be found. I hope the DVD unit does not fail...but I guess for the price I got it for, can't complain much. |
