I want to get an ATSC DVD Recorder.
HAving and HDD would be very nice to have. Having a program guide in order to make recorsing setup easier would also be a nice to have.
Since I time-shift and still in the process of recording when I start watching TV, not having Chase Play would be a deal breaker for me.
Do any of the current ATSC recorders do Chase play?

DRA-01601A. Remote sucks. Seems you have to be with in a few feet and pointed directly at it, or hit the button(s) several times before it will sense it.

AFAIK, all the new Panasonic DVD recorders with ASTC tuners (DMR-EZ17, 27, etc.) offer "chasing playback", where you can watch a program being recording from the start. This is available using DVD-RAM discs only. No HDD though... :(

Hehehe. All I really want is the latest Pioneer recorder updated with an ATSC tuner. I wish Pioneer would reconsider their decision and offer the 640 with an ATSC tuner.
This dream unit would replace my existing DVR-320 (no harddrive unit).
On the other hand, what is up with the new Phillips HDD model? I was at Walleyworld last Sunday and there was a tag and display unit (none in stock though). I went back on Thursday and both tag and display unit were gone.

Really, if most of what you're trying to do is timeshift, getting a Tivo would really make your life much easier.

(Yes, I have a Toshiba XS32 also -- but I would have gotten a Tivo/DVD recorder instead if it had the two features the XS32 has -- edit recordings, and burn in multiple sessions.. Otherwise, the XS32 is one of the most annoying pieces of electronics I've ever had -- though also I like the feature set.)

My current DVD recorder does a fine job. Yes, Tivo would be easier and I would probably end up loving it. I just cannot get past having to pay a monthly fee to subscribe to the Tivo service.

But they wouldn't tell him which.

I don't pay any monthly fee for my Tivos (series 1s and series 3).. unfortunately, that option is no longer offered.

Hopefully this model will be good. I think there are a lot of us watching this board to find out if we are going to finally get an ATSC DVD Recorder with hdd that works with very minimal glitches.

the new Toshiba D-550 has chase play and time slip. I don't see a program guide function on it, unless I'm missing something, so you have to program it like a VCR, but otherwise, I've been happy with it so far.

The Philips with HDD does allow for chasing playback when recording to the hard drive. Works quite nicely. There is a thread for it here. Several of us have them now. You may want to checkit out.

Thanks TimSH.
I have been following that thread closely. So far everything about the unit looks pretty good. The reviews coming in seem much better than other units that have come before this. It is great to see progress on the recorders so fast.

Ram, I understand about the guide. I don't think we'll see that in a recorder for at least another year. It is strange that a guide is standard on all ATSC STB's
