Recorder: New Samsung DVD-R155 (DVD-R, DVD-RDL, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM)

Media: Memorex DVD-RW 2x 4.7GB

Mode: EP, VR (Options are V and VR. Not sure about significance of this, but I think VR allows more editing options. And the disc defaulted to VR mode.)

Symptoms: Plays great in the 155, but DVD cannot be read by my older Samsung DVD player. Manual for that player claims it will play DVD-RW format. Also will not play in the DVD multi-player drive I have in my office. This drive should play every SD format in existence.

Is it "finalized"? If finalizing isn't an option, there should be a "make compatible" or similar option. If you haven't done this, it may not play in anything else until you do.

Yes, I finalized the disc.

DVD-VR recorded media are not DVD Video compliant, and will not play back in all DVD players. DVD+VR is supposed to be readable in standalone players.

Use the "V" mode. It stands for Video Mode which is much more compatable.

Hmmm... You guys have lost me. I thought that in VR mode, the only advantage was the editing features. I did not realize that would make the recording unplayable.

How, then, do you do things like editing out commercials if the V mode won't let you do it? Can you do this using some sort of editing software on a PC?

One step at a time. Try the V mode.

Crappy media as well, Try better quality media. And RW are the least compatible media after RAM. My older Toshiba won't even read an -RW.

If it plays in the machine that burned it then it's less likely to be a media problem.

Nextoo's right - the first thing to try is to burn and finalize a Video mode disc and see if that works.

Thanks for the feedback, all. I'll try a v-mode burn and report back.
