I have the sony xbr 970. Can this tv pick up the HD channels with just the coax cable and no cable box? Because I did a scan and it only picked up some channels and none were in HD. Maybe I did something wrong

i was able to get HD channels via my cable without a cable box. i have comcast in my area. but supposedly i'll be forced to a cable box in the next couple of months. doh!

I have comcast also, located in illinois. Maybe I can do a rescan and see what happens, is that all u did?

I'm in NH and have Comcast without a box, This tv picked up HD local PBS, ABC, NBC and CBS but no Fox. Need the box for HD Discovery etc but you should be able to get the local channels
First time we scanned for channels it picked up nothing but we found that in the TV set up menu it was set to a default of "antenna" and we had to change that to "cable" and then rescan.

i was able to pick up around 40 digital channels(most aren't hd) with just my coax connecetd.

I rescanned for channels, it picked up a lot of digital channels, but none were in HD. I'll just get a A/B switch and hook up my antenna so I can pick up the local channels in HD
