View Full Version : DRC Mode causing problems with SD content on my Sony KV-30HS420 CRT HDTV!!!

Here's the problem, whenever I view SD content (480i. 480p, 720p and 1080i are fine) DRC Mode seems to be the cause of some horrible picture noise. Is there a way to disable it? I noticed that HD content looks great since DRC Mode is disabled so I was wondering if there was a way for me to somehow disable it? What's the name of the SM settings that controle DRC Mode?

Under your video settings pick advanced and under DRC pick interlaced. No processing is done with this setting.

theroys88, even if I choose interlaced the problem remains. I either need to somehow disable DRC Mode or at least find out what service menu settings are DRC Mode related.

Maybe DRC isn't the problem. Perhaps there are some settings still fouled up after you were fooling around in the service menus of your father's TV.

I agree with Ratman...I have Sony RP CRT TV's with DRC, and it does not cause the type of noise you have described earlier in other threads. When you turn it off as Theroys88 described, it is Off, there's nothing further you can do in the service menu.

Try setting all your sources to upconvert to 1080i, then you won't be dealing with SD processing in the TV...and the problem will still be there, you just wont see it.

jdbimmer, I know that some settings are still jacked up and would like to know what SM parameters belong to DRC Mode. Btw, I'm currently running SD content via cable and upconverting the signal to 1080i. The only thing that sucks is that if I want to watch DVD's, I'll have to face the problem since I can't upconvert them.

I don't have your particular Sony, buy I am pretty sure that the Sony's with DRC in the user menu don't have anything in the SM, except the saved setting from the user menu, so it's like a dog chasing his tail if you change it in the SM.

My humble advice: If it is out of warranty, stay out of the SM and get it repaired by a Sony repair tech. Or, buy an inexpensive (refurbished?) upconverting 720p/1080i DVD player, a cheap HDMI switch if necessary (that is if you are using the HDMI input already), and never never watch SD on it again.

I wish I could come in contact with Kentech. I'm sure he would know what to do.

PM him... :)

BTW... that last time he posted was 12/31/06.

I've PM'd him. If I can't get the problem fixed I'll just wait until sony releases a firmware update for the PS3. Suppose to be an upconverting feature for DVD's.

Better hope Sony gets an update before your father notices. ;)

Are you running the cable straight into the tv or are you using component or HDMI via the cable box?

theroys88, it's not just cable. It's any input that displays 480i content. 480p, 720p, and 1080i work great. I know for a fact that it has something to do with DRC Mode.

Your opening post states, "Here's the problem, whenever I view SD content (480i/480p) DRC Mode seems to be the cause of some horrible picture noise."

What changed?

Do you or do you not see the artifacts with 480p input (DVD player, games, etc) ? Be specific... there will be a test afterwards. ;)

DRC Mode only causes artifacts with any 480i content. 480p, 720p and 1080i are fine.

H-m-m-m... maybe you "disabled" DRC in the service menu and perhaps why 480i is spotty.

what picture mode are you running the sony in? Vivid,Standard?

If so there's your problem, use PRO in fact IMHO don't use any other picture mode but pro.

Like "ratman"(AKA MR.T) ;) said you must have screwed something up in the service menu for DRC to not function properly.

SurfingMatt27, would you happen to have a copy of your SM settings for input 5, 6 and 7? That would help me out a ton.

What settings? be specific.

SurfingMatt27

It wouldn't help you anyways since it may escalate the problem even higher.

SurfingMatt27, I'll write down my current settings before I apply the settings you have. I'd really appreciate it.
