'Planet Earth' in both of the formats are doing really great based on The Neilson Chart. However the HD DVD version is outselling the BD version 100 copies to every BD's 95.
The HD DVD version has also hit the highest placing so far for a next generation format. :) :D

Sorry, it was not based on Amazon sales. It was based on the Neilson Chart, the one the BD guys swear by. :D

Might want to be clear that this refers to Amazon sales rankings and not general disc sales.

On that note, does anybody know the actual numbers for discs sold for Planet Earth? Unless it has sold 20,000+ on HD DVD (which would make it one of the top 5 selling HD DVDs of all time so I doubt it), the difference in sales between the two formats is far less than 1000 discs. I'd be curious to know if the rough number of "buy-day" supporters accounts for a significant portion of the difference in disc sales between the two formats. In either case, I think this says more about HD DVD vs. Blu-ray demographics than anything (HD DVD folk more interested in award-winning documentary and Blu-ray folk more interested in award-winning crime drama I guess).

Are we sure that amazon sales are even counted in Nielsen numbers?

This has nothing to do with the Amazon ranks. In fact, I think that the HD DVD version is outselling the Blu-ray version by an even greater number on Amazon.com.

Great news for bluray ;)

The PS3 is doing wonders for Sony, the 0.5 Blu-Ray movies per PS3 sold must be very impressive for the company, I wonder why they don't go public with that number

Didn't you hear? HD DVD is dead so PS3 owners can take their time buying movies.

My error. It was the Neilson Chart. :)

HD DVD is the better format, so I am not surprised. :)

In all fairness lads, its not too much of a surprise..
Planet Earth HD-DVD is a diamond amongst very few releases which were worth picking up at the time, so total sales should/have been pretty good.....but, with a very small margin of error, the BD version could have been in first spot if that ratio is correct..
Bought the HD-DVD version myself, but its plainly obvious that that the BD version had more competition for consumer money during its sales window, and maybe a different demographic it could be argued, with somewhat limited appeal..

Still, its good to see a quality documentary selling well regardless of format..

I'm not sure anyone could present a convincing argument to me that there was more title competition on the BD side in April. The differences in the formats at this stage (in terms of titles) is so slight that I don't see it mattering.

And, even if they could make that argument, I'm not sure it really sways me. Planet Earth is something you either want to buy or you don't. I don't think someone contemplates buying a $100 4-disc documentary set but puts it back on the shelf to pick up Deja Vu or Night at the Museum.

Without turning this into a format war pissing match, I find this information pretty darn interesting. What does it say? BD is supposedly "solidly in the lead" and has millions and millions of players out there. Yet this set outsells it. Why?

Is the HD DVD consumer somehow different than the BD one, with differing tastes? Or does it speak more to the attachment rates of PS3? I don't know... but it definitely shows that *something* is going on at the consumer level.
