Count me in for Hot Fuzz, Meet the Fockers, Dawn of the Dead, Hurricane, Heroes, Battlestar Galactica and Knocked Up! I'll also probably rent some, then decide to buy or not. Solid list.

To each their own, but seems pretty lame for my tastes. I'll probably rent Heroes and Hot Fuzz. I don't see any to buy for me.

Don't flame me for having different tastes. Just my opinion.

I really hope Universal pulls out something pretty impressive for the Holiday season. Hopefully Gladiator!

Gladiator is distributed by Dreamworks, so it'll be on both formats.

Maybe Universal will release Jurrasic Park, A Beautiful Mind, House :)

More Universal announcements on HD DVD, I wonder how long it will take this to turn into another 'Universal going to Blu-Ray' thing

I want to purchase BSG now. haven't seen the 1st season yet, because I wanted it in HD.

It may be disappointing. It sort of works in Tron on DVD with the low res graphics and lots of jaggies, as the viewer is in a highly stylized environment. But when the low res stuff appears in LS which is supposed to be photorealistic reality it might not work.

My pet peeves with internet illiterates are those who use "loose" when they mean "lose" and those who use "peaked" when they really mean "piqued" (my interest).

Haven't you noticed that catalog titles from all studios are non-combos now ? The only ones still being combos are the day-and-dates. I hope they use that one of these days as the ultimate "trojan horse" : price the new day-and-dates combos just like a DVD or close to that, and forego the DVD release altogether...

I TOLD you guys you were being too hard on Universal! Great news :)!Eh, it all depends on your personal tastes. Out of that list, I see one, maybe two potential purchases (Legend and Last Starfighter). Neither one are must have films for me, and I already have the Legend Ultimate Edition on S-DVD. So I'm a bit disappointed. I keep hoping Universal will make good on its nearly two year old promise that Conan the Barbarian is "coming soon", but alas, it seems not to be.

ANyone saying there is nothing of interest on that list has obviously never seen Battlestar Galactica. It is a completely riveting show with fascinating, well-drawn characters, cool effects and very human drama. How it follows 9/11, the war on terror, Iraq, etc. is just icing on the cake.

If you have an HD DVD player, you NEED to feed it BSG!

How it follows 9/11, the war on terror, Iraq, etc. is just icing on the cake. Not to derail, but the show was *much* better before it starting doing that. I don't need my TV shows to lecture me and/or send political messages across.

If you have an HD DVD player, you NEED to feed it BSG!The miniseries, Season 1 and 2, absolutely. I have them in standard DVD and they look great, don't know if I'll upgrade though. They were filmed with a lot of digital noise to help give that documentary feel and I find it distracting at times.

Funny, I feel the exact opposite. I appreciate the Goldsmith score but TG's score was darker and fit the mood a bit better. Goldsmiths score was too classic Happy fairytale-ish.

But I guess it all depends on what you grew up with. Imagine something like Star Wars with a new score.

I agree with you here. The tangerine dream score fit the movie nicely with its dark, moody music. However, I think the perfect version of Legend is not even possible (yet).

The perfect version would be the longer, better directors cut version of the film with the tangerine dream soundtrack!

The TD soundtrack would have to be extended a bit and obviously some parts of the movie (Lily singing) would have the same music as Goldsmiths soundtrack and some goofy parts (Jack doing a flip and saying "I know someone sweeter" to Lily) should be omitted. If that were to be done, then for me, that would be the ultimate version of the film. I don't think it will happen though.. :(

So anyway....the sound of Legend in beautiful HD makes me drool.... :D

05-16-07, 08:35 AM
Are they gonna redo the FX for Last Starfighter? I guess the hokey low texture ships are part of the nostalgia appeal, but I would love to see the FX team from BSG and Firefly redo the space scenes.

The wife is gonna flip when "What dreams may come" and "Legend" are released. She has an illogical love for those films. I think Universal is hitting a lot of mixed appeal releases, which definitely is helping me to swell my HD-DVD library with "wife approved" releases. Fortunately she is waiting for "300" and the Matrix, so is not as if I have to sneak too many titles home :P

It's been years since I saw the Last Starfighter but I want this anyways. I may also pick up Legend and while BSG and heroes interest me, I've never seen either of those and I'm not sure if I want to spend the money on it or not. WOW....What Dreams May Come in HD?!?!? SICK!!! Also Legend should be phenomenal but I do remember the original being rather grainy. How do you think that will pan out?

Well I just recently watched a newer version of Legend (think it was Directors Cut)and for SD it looked so good so I hope they can make it even better. Love this movie.

Me too, I think it's cause I saw it in the theaters and again on vhs and I am just used to the Original version.

So what ever happened to the release of the title LEGEND - every other title announce for the September release has been announced and has a pre-order on Amazon already. Out of all of them I wanted this one the MOST. Come on Universal already and give the offical ok for this release.

erin brokovich is a great movie, but i doubt i will double dip on it since i have the regular dvd
A definite must get - already pre-ordered at Amazon.

Whe it arrives, I'll trade in the SD copy at Blockbuster and get maybe $5 in trade (store credit) for future rentals...I want the HD DVD version for sure.

Maybe I've been living in a cave... but I just found out that Universal is putting out a theatrical sequel to Elizabeth on Oct. 12 called The Golden Age:
http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0414055/

Somehow, I missed this news. I had no idea they were even making this.

So the September release of the HD DVD seems particularly well-timed.

Scott's original intent was to have Goldsmith's score. The Tangerine Dream score was added for no other reason other than purely commercial purposes -- not artistic ones -- for the U.S. market, trying to captialize on getting younger audiences into the theater. Even Scott in the documentary calls it a mistake, especially since the movie flopped anyway.

And when you say Goldsmith's music was "too classic Happy fairytale-ish," I seem to remember it IS most definitely a fairy tale film! lol. ;) To me the Tangerine Dream music plays completely at odds with the film -- making it a truly dated '80s music video, even comical at times.

Either way, though, I understand people who grew up with the TD score like it, so here's hoping Universal gives us BOTH VERSIONS and not just one of them.

I have it on very good authority that the hang up has to do with which version they're going to release...the Ridley Scott people are obviously pushing for their Director's Cut but the Universal folks are thinking along the lines of ONLY releasing the cut U.S. version with the Tangerine Dream score!

Hopefully brighter minds will prevail and they'll put BOTH of them on there...either that or Scott's Director's Cut, as I'd be majorly annoyed if all they release is the compromised U.S. cut with the hideous Tangerine Dream score...especially after they went to so much trouble restoring the film with Goldsmith's score and the extra footage!

Maybe we should write to the Universal folks and let them know about this before they botch this release...

Yes i'm well aware that it's a fairy tale. doy. But a dark fairytale. Goldsmiths score didn't fit the mood for me is all i'm saying.

I'm curious...which version did you grow up with?

There's more than a little "dark" in Goldsmith's score IMO.

I was 12 when the Tangerine Dream version came out and, as someone who appreciated film music at an early age, I was very disappointed Goldsmith's music was gone. I never liked the TD score at all, in any way. It ruined the movie for me, and when Goldsmith's music was restored, I felt as if I had seen LEGEND for the first time (even though it's still a flawed film).

But I realize some folks still like the TD score, even if Scott himself is on record as saying the biggest mistake he made with the movie was allowing Universal to dump it in the hopes of appealing to youths who, ultimately, didn't even show up to see it.

Awesome titles! Sci-fi films and TV shows seem to do really well, so Heroes, Battlestar Galatica & the last Starfighter should be hits. “Knocked Up” should be a huge hit, even driving business to the platform.

The perfect storm is brewing… great movies, awesome exclusives, aggressive pricing, new promotions..

Except the two situations aren't comparable at all.

Scott didn't change his mind about what he wanted -- LEGEND was conceived with and originally shot, filmed, and edited with Goldsmith's score. His music even played a part in the narrative through the songs he wrote with lyricist John Bettis. That's the movie that ALWAYS should have been released (and pretty much was everywhere except North America, albeit in a cut-down version too). It ain't anything like George Lucas "changing his mind" with STAR WARS on multiple versions.

There wasn't any reason for the existence of the Tangerine Dream version except Universal execs hoped to pander to the MTV market and sell some more tickets. They essentially forced Scott's hand and re-cut the movie, totally against the original intent of the filmmaker and the script in a number of areas. Artistically one can say that version has no validity whatsoever, other than nostalgia for viewers like you who grew up with it. There's less story, less character development, less drama, and less passion IMO in that shortened American cut.

And I'm not saying viewers shouldn't have a preference between the two, but to suggest like you have that bastardized U.S. cut ought to be out there ahead of the Restored Director's Cut is basically, to me, like saying the proposed, shortened, bastardized Universal cut of BRAZIL ought to be out there before Gilliam's original Director's Cut. There's another movie Universal ruined around the same time back in the mid '80s, for no other reason than trying to "enhance commercial prospects."

It's comparable to the point that I want what I grew up with and thats it.

Plus I don't think the "Directors" cut should not be released here. I would like to see both, but MY preference if I had a choice would to have what originally made me like this film.

I perfectly understand what Ridley originally made. I watched the doc on the Ultimate set. Still didn't change my mind on what version I like better. Say Lucas decided to release a version of Star Wars with a different musical score and you had no idea that this version was actually the original version he created. How would you feel?

The theatrical cut of Legend is only 'bastardized' to the people who didn't grow up with it IMO. And it's not just Nostalgia. I think the TD score is darker and fits better.

The theatrical cut of Legend is only 'bastardized' to the people who didn't grow up with it IMO.

So by your logic, to hell with what the writers and directors want -- let's have studio executives and marketing firms figure it out instead! Because that is EXACTLY what happened on LEGEND.

And it's not just the music that was affected either. Universal re-edited the film in a number of ways that completely went against the original story and Scott's intentions. Just look at how they clumsily took footage from the END of the film and put it at the beginning to infer that the Tom Cruise & Mia Sara characters had sex...pretty much totally against the tone of a fairy tale film and completely against what the writer and Scott intended.

So I'd say the U.S. cut was "bastardized" to, umm, pretty much everyone who worked on the film. And more than a few people were pissed Goldsmith's score was tossed even at the time of the film's release.

Hmmm. I've seen this movie 100 times and not once did I think Jack and Lily did the bone dance in the scene you mentioned. He just kissed her and it was totally innocent.

The writer originally wanted Darkness to have sex with Lily if you watched the doc. So I don't think he intended Legend to be a typical fairy tale film.
