View Full Version : Onkyo Remote (590M) learning commands - long red light

I'm not sure how to interpret the signal/info I'm getting from my Onkyo remote (RC-590M).

I'm teaching it some commands from my the Motorola DCT 6416 DVR the cable company just brought me. After teaching the commands, they seem to work, however, when a particular command is executing (say, DOWN ARROW, for example), the red light at the top/front of the remote stays lit for approx 2 seconds.

Commands for other devices work more "instantaneously", red light just quickly flashes. No info about this in the manual. I'm *assuming* this means the commands that the remote is learning from the cable Motorola DVR are being interpreted as "long" commands (sending the IR signal for a couple seconds as opposed to quick blast).

Does this make any sense?
Is there any way to get the Onkyo to learn the "short signals" instead of the long ones?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/help.

It's been a while since you posted this, but I'm wondering...did you ever figure out the problem? I'm having the exact same issue when trying to get my RC-590M to learn from my Dish Network remote.

Hey yapper - no, unfortunately never figured this one out.

There are just a couple commands that exhibit this behavior, preventing me from being able to hold down the button and get a bunch of those commands sent at once (like DOWN ARROW to quickly move many rows down a channel lineup grid for example)

For now, I'm still living with it. Hopefully someone will reply someday. :)

Volleynerd,

Oh I see what you mean. In my particular instance I'm merely trying to program the pause button. Mind you, I haven't tried any others yet, but for the pause button at least what happens is: I have the 590 'learn' the signal, and when I actually use the newly programmed button on the 590, it works. However, the red light at the top of the remote stays lit for several seconds (5-6s) and during that time, nothing on the remote will work at all, like it's locked up.

It seems to me that the issue has something to do with a fundamental difference in the way Dish Network devices send their signals. So it's weird to me that I can't find squat about it anywhere on the net. Cause you'd think it'd be affecting other universal remote combos. Maybe I'm just not using the right search strings but yours is the first and only post I've run across and I've been looking quite a while.

Well, if you wouldn't mind...if you find anything out please post it on this thread. I'll do the same.

Cheers.
