Yes, this is great news.

I read about it just a few minutes ago on kotaku.com

I'm going to try it out in another couple of minutes.

I'm very excited about the output to DTS. My receiver doesn't do anything but DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 since it's a few years old and I refuse to upgrade considering the price of my home theater altogether was around $2,000 and it still sounds excellent.

I never understood why there was no DTS in HD-DVD anyway. Why does HD-DVD rely so heavily on DD 5.1 when DTS 5.1 is clearly better? I don't get it...

Is their a way to dl this and burn it to disc? I still can't find a link to download the spring update. I only have dial up at work and would rather not drag in my 360...

I got the update this morning. DVE works fine now, but Relentless Enemies still can't be read  I am upset now, because it's far to late to return the movie. Any thoughts Chris or Amir? Has MS tested this movie with the new update? I am wondering if I actually recieved a defective disc, or if it's a problem with the HD-DVD add on.

Call me an idiot but I've updated and can't find any way to output any HD-DVD in DTS like we're supposed to be able to do.

If I go to console settings and then audio I've got Stereo / Dolby Digital / and WMA Pro options, sure, but no DTS one.

I'm upset. What am I missing? I've got my 360 playing via Monster Component video to my 1080p tv (yes, playing in 1080p too) and the optical digital audio cable to my receiver.

If someone can figure out what's wrong and why I can't get the DTS output option, thanks in advance!

Thanks...

I never used my controller for playback but always my media remotes.

I suppose it was too much trouble for MS to put the DTS option in the dashboard. Maybe they will with the next update.

This update made a great piece of hardware outstanding.I wasn't expecting them to add all the new features and options they did, especially with all the new sound options.

1080P looks OUT OF THIS WORLD via one of the new 360 Elite's let me tell you.It easily rivals the image on my A20.

Now all we have to do is continue the battle with the BDA over the information war :(

BDA: HD DVD cant do 1080p
People who know how to read: Yes it does, stfu!

Press "Display" button on remote while watching movie. It will bring OSD.

I would say use your 360 remote to bring up HD DVD Menu. With a MOVIE in your HD DVD Drive hit the "B" button on your controller. The HD DVD Menu will pop-up. Select ADVANCE. Then scroll the options until you get "Audio Options" hit select 7 make your changes...

Hope this helps

Guys, can the 360 HD-DVD stretch the picture to fill a 16:9 screen even if the movie itself is not 16:9? For example, King Kong is not 16:9 so there are black bars on top and bottom. I looked in the menu but couldn't get it to stretch the way you can with regular DVDs :( Is there a way to zoom?

Thx

Hey, just a side note...it says in the on screen display that "these audio option only pertain to HD DVD's, for other audio options goto audio in XBOX dashboard" or something like that....so I took it to mean that I could only get DTS with the update thru HD DVD's, but I put in a SD disk I knew had 6.1 discreet DTS (LOTR: Fellowship of the Rings) and low an behold, my AVR 240 receiver clear as day said DTS was being received, WOOHOO!!!

The reason is that DVDs were normally encoded anamorphic, that means the picture was stretched on the DVD and subsequently was unstretched by the DVD-Player in order to output the correct aspect ratio.
Since High Definition doesnt need be encoded anamorphic, for HD is always 16:9. Thus the picture is stored on the disc in the correct aspect ratio.

For you that means that there is no way the Xbox can stretch the picture.
You habe to look in you TV settings, maybe there is a approach to do that.

I don't understand how one can watch a movie with actors having egg-heads, for instance.

That would then limit the dynamic range, which is the "night mode" bug that this update fixes. Leave it "off" if you want full dynamic range, turn it "on" if you're watching a movie while somebody's asleep in the house... :D

buy some 5.1 headphones instead, but leave the night mode off

>>can the 360 HD-DVD stretch the picture to fill a 16:9 screen

even if it could, you don't want to do it. you want to see the movie as the director intended and aspect ratio is part of that.

edit:

you may be concerned that you are losing some resolution or viewable area, get a larger 1080p display.

Okay, I ran the update this evening...

THE GOOD NEWS: It seems the audio sync issues are gone. Of all my discs, the worst place I noticed this issue was during the rooftop scene in "The Departed" toward the end of the movie, where they were yelling obscenities at each other. Tested it with both DD 5.1 and DTS, looked like the audio was sync'd up to me. Yay!

THE BAD NEWS: I recently picked up "The Nutty Professor" and decided to pop this in. About six minutes into the movie, where Clump is in the deans office, the audio dialog, although understandable, had some background "garble" going on. It continues throughout the movie with the DTS option enabled. I switched to DD 5.1 and the garble goes away. Curious to see if anyone else has experienced a similar issue.

Oh well...

the update fixed playback issues with children of men (it no longer freezes up and chapter 17-20) but i still cant get smokin aces to play. Just get the error message that says this disk cannot be read.

Hrm... I just sent back my COM to universal for a replacement. My problem with the disc was it stuttered and froze near the end at one specific scene. I wonder if that problem was fixed with the update... :\

Is there some way to check if the update has taken effect? I just hooked up to live but it doesn't prompt me for an update the way it usually does.
Pop in a movie first....then it will prompt the update.

You can also check if you have the update by going into the audio options once the movie starts (press B) and then see if you have a DTS option. If you do, then you got the update.

I had the same problem with the movie "Swordfish". I had to switch to DD 5.1.
