I have had problems with my add on drive and CoM and Smokin' Aces. I have not had a chance to run the update yet and was wondering if people who were having problems (and kept the problem disc) are now able to play them after the update? Please post your tests whether good or bad and please keep this thread to only disc compatability issues. No audio questions.

Thanks!

The 360 update fixes a huge number of compatibility issues. If your discs still don't play, then they're probably defective and Universal will exchange them for free and gives you good ones.

There are already reports coming in that CoM still has issues. That's why I started this thead. I'd like to see only confirmed reports, i.e. people had problems and now don't or people are still having problems.

As for the Uni exchange program, I'd rather just return my movie then go through Uni. I think their system stinks to be honest. I'm just supposed to email some random address? How about an official link on their website that takes me to an online form to fill out and send me a confirmation email? Is that too much to ask? So I can either send an email to god only knows or just return the thing and wait till hopefully only good copies are in stores... (This is of course assuming the update doesn't work...)

CoM worked for my 360 before the update, I'd have to think that you have a bad disc.

As far as I know, Children of Men for example is already playing successfully on the HD DVD add-on even prior to the update for many owners.

As for Universal, it isn't some random address. It is one specific address: Universal Studios Home Entertainment (mailto:USHE.ConsumerRelations@worldmarkinc.com) (Consumer Division). I think they even pay for the shipping, so you have nothing to lose.

I've seen that article. And I actually emailed them this morning about my Smokin' Aces disc. I just don't like it. No confirmation email from them that they received my email. No details about what needs to be included in my email (address, phone number, etc?). It just doesn't seem professional at all. Like something you'd expect from some mom and pop shop...

I know a lot of the Uni combos were working. But there were a ton of discs that weren't. Search this site. There are tons of polls and threads about this problem. It's very well known. I'm not making this up. So again, if people were having compatability issues, please post your tests after updating to the latest firmware. (The reason I'm asking is people were reporting that on Toshiba players the firmware update resolved the issues.)

Huh? Can you point me to a link that said v1.5 resolved the combo disk issues? If that's the case, I'm definitely not buying another Uni combo because it didn't fix my TGS problem...

I don't have a link in front of me but it was from either this site or HiDefDigest. Search through the CoM, TGS, or Smokin' Aces playback problems threads. There are a coupld posters (if my memory serves me correctly) stating they had the issue, then upgraded to the latest firmware, and no longer had the issue.

the update mostly fixed my problems with fast and furious tokyo drift. It only stutters in one place now whereas it used to be that an entire scene was unwatchable. I also notice that if I set it to output dts it works flawlessly. Intersting

Once they receive your email they will send you a reply with the information you need to send them so that they can mail you a Pre Paid envelope....I mean if you dont trust it just do a search for those that have already completed the process....

As for CoM I used to have problems at the "school" chapter but it played through that I could hear the player working hard and it started to stutter but it kept playing through the disc and did not freezre like before....

I think you're mistaken...see

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/mytwocentsa136.html#toshfirm

"The HD-XA2, HD-A20, HD-A2, HD-A2W and HD-D2 are all currently on version 1.5 of their firmware, while the HD-XA1, HD-A1 and HD-D1 are all up to version 2.2 at the moment. The new updates that will address the Universal Combo disc problem will be available online via the Ethernet connection, and you'll be able to order them on CD as well."

In any event, it's been 3 days and I still haven't received an email from Universal. Tosh emailed me -- in addition to the phone call I made -- and both times they told me it's not a problem on their end. They also couldn't give me any status on a 1.6 FW release that would fix the problem -- which would make sense since they're allegedly disavowing any responsibility.

At this point I'm pretty fed up and I guess I'll try and take the disk back to BB for an exchange (since it's open). It will absolutely be the last Uni combo I buy...I don't need anything new from their catalog bad enough to roll the dice again. At least the old catalog stuff won't be using combos anymore.

Yeah but how long does it take to send a template-style email saying we'll get to you as soon as we can. It's not like I sent the mail via Pony Express. Awful, awful CS and QC if you ask me. I'm equally as hard on Sony (if not more so), so it is quite justified for Uni to be bashed for the same poor CS that Sony deals us.

Children of men no longer freezes on chapter 17 so the update fixed that for me, however i still cant get smokin aces to play. Stuck with the dreaded "cant read disk" message. To bad i cant get my money back for opened disks cause i doubt exchanging it for another one will fix the problem. If i do decide to buy the matrix i will be really pissed to drop a 100 bucks on something that doesn't play. Gonna wait till others post that it is indeed working on the 360 addon.

You bought it at BB and your complaining. I don't know of anyone who hasn't had some problem with a CD or DVD, and Electronic Item that needed to be replaced instantly. Its one of the advantages of buying things locally you can just walk in side an exchange it. Heck if they have a display up you can even have them test the new one to see if it works before taking it home. When I worked in what is now Geek Squad I would do this all the time DVD, VHS, CD, PS1, PS2, Xbox, CameGube discs. Man people act like a company killed there mother when one little thing goes wrong. After Smokin Aces Universal said they fixed the problem as well so really your saying that even Though GS, CoM, and SA are probably the only ons we will see with this issue.

The next will probably be Hot Fuzz. Wait for the reviews I am guessing we have a fraction of people with problems.

I watched Smokin' Aces just fine last night after applying the update. I'd suggest exchanging the disc (or better yet - try and get your money back - what an absolutely dreadful movie! - IMHO of course...)

After two bad copies of COM, I received my replacement from Uni yesterday. It had a (removeable) sticker on the case saying "Inspected." I didn't play the whole movie, but it did start up - no "can't read disc."

My copy of Smokin' Aces would hang hard after running the Uni screensaver for a few minutes; after the update it doesn't hang, dunno if the update fixed it or just a coincidence.

I work hard for my money, and I don't like to waste my time, especially not in BB where they have no clue how to handle exchanges and returns in an expeditious manner. And if the disk is completely hosed through no fault of my own, guess what? I have a right to complain, as I am the customer and I am in the right. I am VERY patient with issues that are uncommon and trivial, but when I drop $1,000 on a player that works intermittently (or not at all in this case), and $25-$30 per disk, I WILL complain, and loudly...especially if the company producing the disk doesn't have the common courtesy to email me a template response.

EDIT: Oh and BTW, count me as your first example of someone who has never had a problem with a CD or DVD (unless it's a title someone gave to me as a gift that I didn't want). And I have extensive collections of both.

Depends on the person, me I would despise a generic answer because its no help at all. To me reading even sentence of that would be considered a waste of time. But with best buy I am not talking about even wasting your time, if you are already at BB (which I am guessing you go there regularly to buy HD-DVDs) the n really what hassle is it.

Second who said anything about player, I am pretty sure that its been found to be a fault of the disc even if firmware updates can overcome the problem.

I am just saying if you get so upset about a 20 dollar disc not working, then your going to get really angry when that 60 dollar PC game installs a piece of software (without you knowing) that isn't compatible with certain software or burners. That CD that install (unknown to you) copyright protection software. That memory that doesn't detect for your PC, that DVD player that doesn't output through HDMI correctly. the new car that has a small easy to fix oil leak, that house that needs a piping elbow to be replaced, your first kid that turns out to have ADD. How much you want or spent on anything doesn't remove the chance of you having an issue. While it sucks its bound to eventually happen.

PS. I once had a Frosty the Snowman DVD that had an educational math video on it instead. That is even more likely then a disc that just won't read but its still possible.

It does depend on the person, but I for one would rather have a generic response that said something like "We have received your complaint and are processing it. Give us time." That would at least tell me they are looking into it.

I've had consistent (albeit minor) issues with audio and some playback with the XA2. The firmware updates have been fixing them it appears. When taken as individual issues, they really aren't that problematic. But when viewed comprehensively, it becomes really frustrating -- especially when I am completely confused as to whether it's my player or the disk that's the problem, or a combination of both. It appears to be a combination, because the link I posted above cites that Tosh is releasing another update to address the issues.

You are citing completely unrelated examples. When you are talking PCs, you are talking a completely heterogeneous environment and one that is bound to have some minor issues from time to time. You can't test for every scenario with PCs. With HD, it is a very small environment that one must test in. It shouldn't be that hard to make sure a disk plays properly in what, 5 or so different units?

My problem is not that issues may arise, we all have to accept that. But it's how the companies handle the situation that makes or breaks how *I* handle it. IMO Uni and Tosh are handling this the same way Sony would -- and that's not a compliment, considering I loathe Sony.
