I just bought a new receiver (Yamaha RXV661) . This is my first receiver, if you don't count my 20YO Technique rack system. I also bought a pair of Polk RM50TGY, parir of RM101 and a RM202. Now I need a sub and was looking at a HSU VTF1 or STF2. Being an extremely novice, what would you recommend? will be about split use between tv/dvd and music (radio/mp3 via wireless music bridge to my computer). The living room is the middle level of a modest townhouse.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you want variable tuning, the VTF-1 is your choice. If you don't care about variable tuning and would use the maximum extension mode anyway, then you will get essentially the same performance for less money with the STF-2 (assuming you don't mind waiting until they are in stock again). In its maximum output setting, the VTF-1 will play louder, but you may not want/need that in your townhouse.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the VTF-1 has a different amplifier, but it carries the same power rating, so the difference, if any, would be very subtle. Either will give you fine results.

Does HSU offer any deals for AVS members?

I don't think so and don't see why either.

Which one would be better for music, the STF-2?

I would either get the STF-2, or the Outlaw LFM-1 Plus. Either one is a good choice. The Outlaw LFM-1 Plus is on sale for $499 plus shipping until the end of May.

The LFM-1 Plus is larger and much more powerful. It should be the last subwoofer you ever need.

All the Best

I had the VTF1 before returning it and getting a used STF2 for $300 out the door (sorry, just had to brag about that one). I can't comment on the VTF's max output mode as I never removed the port plug when I had it, but the VTF1 in max extension and the STF2 sounded identical.

I don't think my middle level constitutes a large room. the viewing area of the level is about 10x10, but is in open space on my floor. Does that necessitate the "large room"? I don't want to overpower my house/neighboorhood. Though I am thinking future, and won't be in the townhouse for many years. think bigger house.

From Dr Hsu:
16 x 25 is a large space. I would recommend going for at least a VTF-2 MK3. Place it in the front left corner.

again sir, thank you for your time. attached are two pics I snapped and a crude layout of the floor. I would like to put a sub in the upper left corner, under an end table. please ask me anything.

Can you email me your room layout including dimensions and where the seating area is, etc.?
