The novelty slipcase is neat. I think I'll give this a spin tonight.

I agree, The slipcase is one of the best I've ever seen.

Wow that sounded strange

Does it say "and more?" Because there are a lot of extras missing...including the commentary, if that's the case.

I'm guessing there's no chance this includes the theatrical cut? :(

No this is the unrated cut it seems, at the beggining of the movie it states additional footage has been added to the theatrical version.

any chance it includes that ticket to Knocked up? :)

Tier 3 tops, I actually just put it back in to make sure it was as bad as I thought.

I definitely prefer the theatrical over the unrated. Guess I'll be holding on to the R-rated widescreen dvd for now. I'm glad they gave this one U-Control as well.

If it looks anywhere near as nice as the HD version from cable, I'll be happy. Mine won't be here till next week, though...

Where did you guys order it from? I have long since received my confirmation email on this order from Amazon, but as of today, the money has still not been charged and it has not shipped, and I added 2-day shipping....wtf? =(

I would guess they got it from DVD Pacific. They always ship before street date.

Geoff D

what about the PQ
It's colourful enough, and some shots do 'pop', but there's a slight softness to the image which is compounded by the most noticeable edge halos I've seen on some 60-odd titles so far.

This ain't an 'eye candy' type of flick so it's not enough to get worked up about, but I sincerely hope that this isn't a sign of things to come from Universal. Artificial edge-sharpening has no place on DVD, let alone HD.

There's no chance any of this is inherent to the master or problems with your displays? It's not like Universal to screw up a popular title like this. I mean, look how Eternal Sunshine turned out.

Thanks - forgot about them, seem to be hearing their name often, I see why. =)

As far as the PQ - the SD is really great (especially considering 1:85) - I'd be surprised if the HD version is not outstanding...hmmmm....hope they didn't fowl up this title, should be a pretty big mover for them over time.

Yes I got it from DVD Pacific, it shipped on Saturday. (Matrix came to)

Amazon sends two emails, one after completetion of order, and the second after the pakcage is shipped. They also do not charge until it ships which is why you havnt been charged.

Any chance on getting some pics of the slip cover, back of the covers, cover open, the disc itself, etc.?

Lots of things can affect PQ, not the least of which is a lower budget for buying filmstock and doing post processing work. After all, this is a comedy we're talking about, not the latest action blockbuster.

I can't imagine that is true. I just saw it on cable and it looked high Tier 2 at least.

I've seen a few recent posts now that have very highly praised the SD disc as a superb transfer. Maybe I need to go back to it...I haven't watched it in a few months, but I remember feeling unimpressed by it.

But on the comments that it's not so good on HD, perhaps I shall wait for reviews and skip it come Tuesday if there aren't positive things to say.

I love the R-rated cut much better too! I didn't realize it was available in widescreen on dvd, I thought they just released it full frame? The unrated cut is ok, but just TOO MUCH.

The broadcast HD version had some pretty obvious EE. Sounds like the HD release is no different.

What's the difference between the theatrical version and unrated? Obviously more on the unrated, but why do people enjoy the theatrical version more? Just because it's shorter? Because the unrated is insanely long.

Trust me, I have not seen edge halos as prominent as this on any of my HD-DVDs. (And I ran DVE HD to make sure that everything's okay.)

Please don't confuse my tone for typical internet hyperbole though. I'm not inferring that the effect is so bad that it ruins the PQ, but it is there and it does affect the integrity of what is already a slightly soft image.

There's a fair amount of extra material on this disc, so maybe Universal filtered out a little detail (I'm surprised that there's so little visible grain) to make for an easier encode and added some edge enhancement in a futile attempt to compensate. Still, by the time the credits rolled I was enjoying this sweet-natured flick so much that the halos were the last thing on my mind.

I await my my copy of Frighteners. . .

Let me ask this, would you say the image quality is a notable improvement over SD DVD in general?

Universal quietly released the R-rated cut in Widescreen after they supposedly received complaints that it wasn't available when the film was released on dvd. I haven't seen a copy in stores, but I bought mine at Bestbuy.com for $14.99. Amazon.com also has it for $17.99.

Artificial edge-sharpening has no place on DVD, let alone HD.

but universal welcomed it with open arms on the DVD ... which was a mess. looks like some of the problem was down to the HD master. good one universal. "the look and sound of perfect" my ass. more like "we really couldn't give a sh*t how it looks or sounds".

i hate these quality fluctations. this is why i'm always nervous about pre-ordering anything from these hacks.

I just flipped through it.

Unfortunately, there is still a little too much edge enhancement and a slight lack of detail. Overall though, much better looking than the dvd.

7.5 out of 10

Just more scenes, extended scenes. Some of it funny, but not needed. 2 hrs. and 15 minutes is just too long for that movie. I thought it was borderline too long in the theater. But I still love it. Hope the R-rated is available on HD DVD one day.

Yes, color me disappointed in the unrated cut, it's garbage, made a funny but raunchy movie unwatchable. Anyone interested in a once-viewed copy, mine is not going to do anything but gather dust...
