I recently found this over on audiojunkies.com. Are these Dayton subs any good, like as compared to a Hsu STF-1? I'm lookin for a good sub, 90/10 for music, that's less than $300 bucks.

What do you guys think? Would any of these from the 8 up to the 12" work as well as the Hsu?

You may want to try and search the DIY forum for Dayton and see what that turns up.

No! :p

The Daytons used to have a good reputation as arguably the best values under $200. Then they changed suppliers a year and a half ago or so, and the bloom went off their rose. The new ones are considered one-note wonders, like most other inexpensive subs.

I bought one of the last of the older, supposedly better, 12" Daytons. It was a good value at <$150, and I currently use it with my computer/FM system. However, it was better in it's original use as a HT speaker.

I also own an STF-1, used mostly for FM listening in my bedroom (same stations). No comparison. The STF-1 cost twice as much, but it is worth every cent. It is far cleaner for music.

Of course, I listen to acoustical music only. Some rap or even rock enthusiasts might enjoy the coloration the Dayton adds, especially those who prefer the thump of a car system. We all have our own priorities.

Oh yes, to save someone the trouble, I'll suggest you check out the AV123 X-Sub, a forum favorite. I still prefer the Hsu, but the X-Sub is very highly regarded here and costs ~$200.

The new Dayton "budget" subs are garbage. As was mentioned, PE changed suppliers and the difference is "night and day." I have the original "Tiny Mighty" Dayton sub abd it is decent for a small 10" sub. I had one of the newer Daytons and sent it back after 2 days.

For a great 10" sub you could also watch for the 10" titanic kit that goes on sale for $280 shipped at times. Great sub.

I just assembled the 15" kit for a friend and thought it did a good job on both music and film. The amp is 250wpc and the driver was fair.

It won't be pitch perfect or produce huge SPL's , but i liked it for the money.Assembly time was about 20minutes.Free shipping would be nice :)

I purchased the current 12" version about 6 months ago. I tried to like it over a 2 week period. Tried everything, different placement, standing on my head, calibrations, phaise, nothing helped. I compaired it to the smaller 10" Athena subs, both 400 and 4000 around the same price point. Both totally outshined the Dayton in all areas exept headroom. I finally returned it. IMO run from this one, don't know about the kits though.

On a side note, PEs customer service is awesome, they worked with me the entire time but in the end it was returned with no hassles and a prompt refund.
