I was checking out the Warner Home Video website and was surprised to see that the Elvis Presley classics, "Viva Las Vegas" and "Jailhouse Rock" are on their way to HD DVD and Blu-ray. I don't recall hearing any announcements about the release of these titles to either high definition format from Warner Bros. No dates are posted but they can be pre-ordered at the site.

Sweet. I love Warner's agressive catalogue releases (I spelled that right, I'm Canadian :p)! They seriously have put out so many older films, and I love it. As much as I love The Departed or Superman Returns, I also love Casablanca and Superman: The Movie.

Well, bust my buttons! Shortly after the WHV email announcement of "300" on Hidef arrived this morning, I got another email from WHV about 16 Elvis films coming out for Elvis week (August 7th)...but I didn't look at the very fine print below two of them that says "coming on Hi-Def at $28.99".

Now this is cool!
I've been an Elvis fan since he broke out nationally in '56.
Not only did I see these films when they were new, but ya know those old clips of him on Ed Sullivan, etc.? I saw those when they were live. :D

Viva Las Vegas for me. I would order G.I. Blues (favorite Elvis film) and Blue Hawaii if they were out.

Fantastic announcement. My two favorite Elvis films finally get the treatment they deserve. The SD-DVDs were attrocious early DVDs made from laserdisc prints.

Bring it on Warner. Go into that vast library and release to your hearts content. I'll be buying these oldies as hopefully Warner will release them as pristine as Battle of the Bulge, Searchers, Grand Prix, Mutiny on the Bounty....

This is actually very awesome. I love these old transfers, loved The Dirty Dozen, Cazablanca, Robin Hood, and I'm sure I'll love these too. Not the biggest Elvis fan but I've always dug oldies rock'n'roll.

And these are definitely better choices for Elvis movies than some of his other ones (Claaaaaaambake!).

Thank God!

I was begining to think that there were no Elvis fans left in the USA.

I have both. I have not watched either one yet. I do not recall reading about TrueHD; both have TrueHD 5.1 remastered soundtracks.

Both of these titles look fantastic for Elvis fans. I got them a few days ago. Think Grand Prix, Blazing Saddles PQ.

I've only had time to watch Jailhouse Rock and I have to agree with the consensus here. The PQ was exceptional.

I swear I saw lint on Elvis' shirt in one scene. Or maybe it was a piece of fiber from the material in his shirt, but either way the fine object detail was amazing.

I was also impressed by the front soundstage during the musical numbers. During those brief sequences it really opened up.

I saw Viva Las Vegas on Friday, 2 weeks ago. Looked really good. Haven't gotten around to Jailhouse Rock yet.

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/vivalasvegas.html:
One could argue that the source has been cleaned up so much that it looks too good, resulting in a digital feel to the transfer that may anger some purists -- to be sure, any "film-like" feel is long gone. Fleshtones look "painted on," which hardly helps realism (though to be fair, the excessive make-up may have something to do with it, and the "kabuki face" look is entirely typical to musicals of the period). Also, while '60s film stocks were understandably soft by today's standards, it's clear some some serious edge enhancement has been applied to sharpen up 'Viva Las Vegas.' Halos can be obvious at times, as well as jaggies on hard lines
...
and gives it a 4.5/5. The text sounds rather like 2/5 to me. No purchase if that was accurate.

I saw the first 15 minutes of Viva las Vegas two days ago, and it looked splended! The picture quality was amazing. The movie itself seemed enjoyable too. I really look forward to see the whole film this weekend.
